How to get up when the alarm goes off
It made me
Sleepy!

How I did it: My job allows some flexibility around when we get into the office so I never had any motivation for getting up on time. My new boss has recently setup a daily 9:00 am face to face status meeting with our team and it's completely embarrassing to show up late! Not being late for this meeting was my initial motivation to ween myself off the snooze button. For the first few weeks or so I was super sleepy and felt rushed and frazzled in the morning. So I decided to do as much as I can to minimize the amout of time I spent getting ready in the morning. I would pack my lunch at night, lay out my clothes, pluck my eyebrows, whatever made sense to do the night before. Over the next few weeks it got easier and easier then (walla!) I was waking up on my own minutes before my alarm went off. It is still a struggle if I don't get to bed on time though; it's much harder to avoid the snooze button when you haven't even gotten in a good snooze so I continue to work on trying to get to bed on time. How I did it: I tried everything from an annoying electric alarm clock to a Big Ben clock. The electric was off a few times in the winter due to ice and that prompted me to use a Big Ben but I'd fail to wind it or wind it enough. Now I use the alarm on my cell phone. Well I’m still using my cell phone to get me up in the mornings. I’ve had a few setbacks but the last three weeks I’ve been really good at this on workdays. I’m letting myself slide on the weekends unless I’ve got an appointment. I am content with my progress.

Not doing it…. and that’s not the worst of it. I don’t HEAR it and it’s LOUD. I keep it next to my head even. Sometimes, when I do hear it, my mind doesn’t register that it is time to get up. Maybe the problem is that I’m trying to get up around 7:00 a.m. and I don’t ever have to be at work before 2:00 p.m. I think that subconsciously I don’t have that sense of urgency. I’d like to get up at 7:00 though so I could do more around the house before going to work.

Even though it’s been cool the past several mornings and it’s been hard to crawl out of the warm bed, I’ve made it! One more week down! One to go and then I’m saying that I have this one finished. :)

A few weeks ago, we had 75 mph winds and the electric was off in the area for several days. It was then that I decided that an old fashioned wind-up clock was the thing I needed. I bought a “Little Ben” and I’ve been really good at winding it every day. I’ve even gotten better at hearing it and realizing it is the alarm going off. The first day it went off, I was dreaming and in my dream I was on the phone. You got it… didn’t hear it go off. Now, however, I realize that I’ve turned the phone off and I need to answer the alarm! So far so good.
