Ayleesha Looking forward to Punta Canta, my brother getting married!
There is nothing better than eating your own homemade foods!
I’m still learning but so far I’ve done avocado dips/dressing, hummus, nut milks, soy and tofu ice cream, bread (only one but it didn’t turn out so good… gotta keep trying! There’s going to be a lot of trial and error), multi-grain pancakes, vegetarian sushi, and a miso soup.
I got my recipes from these books:
- How it All Vegan! by Tanya Barnard & Sarah Kramer
- The Garden of Vegan by Tanya Barnard & Sarah Kramer
- La Dolce Vegan! by Sarah Kramer
Check out their website:www.govegan.net
Next I’m going to try sugar-free pasta sauces, breads (attempt #2, in my new the new breadmaker I got for Christmas), muffins, more dips, salad dressings, vegan mayo, spreads, soups, you name it!
Awww man, now I’m hungry! lol

When you make your own foods, you know what’s in it, and what’s not, like preservatives, additives, too much salt, stuff you don’t know how to pronounce, and a whole lot of other bad-for-you stuff.
I’d like to make my own preserves, pasta sauces, fruit sauces (applesauce. etc.) pasta, breads, jelly (using vegan gelatin), jam, ketchup, etc.
It’s worth it. Everything tastes fresher, you know what’s in it, it’s very creative and satisfying. But it does take a lot of time.
I cook more things from scratch in the summer (I get inspired by all the fresh produce that’s available).
It’s really not hard to make your own homemade foods. Cooking just requires patience, time, and practice, like any other art. My general rule when I’m making something new is to follow the recipe EXACTLY the first time, then tweak it the next time (if it’s worth remaking).
Some recent recipes from the Ballantyne home: grilled portobello mushroom burgers, corn chowder, stuffed mushrooms, jalapeno cheddar cornbread, oriental style greenbeans, fresh salsa, red pepper hummus….
