man this bhook is fun 2 years ago

I’m reading it on the subway during my hour plus commute to work.
I don’t get how some people criticize this book as “just some guy walking around talking to people.” 3/4 of Joyce is like that, Gilgamesh is that (and people’s faces looking ‘like they had been on a long journey’), On the Road is that, every book is like that. And quantifying plot seems both irrelevant and impossible.
The book is fun and crazy and although I am only halfway through it, I find it wonderful.

    Shelving this for now.

I read dhalgren in colorado when I lived in the woods.

Okay, I bought another copy to work with until the one that’s currently in Vermont wanders back to me. Not that I’m impatient for that to happen, though I do someday want again to see my “Sewer, Gas, Electric”

Of course, I still have to reread it... 4 years ago

I think it might be like Finnegans Wake that way.

i liked dhalgren a lot – more so a few months after reading it (maybe it’s been slowly sinking in)... the last chapter was a little more difficult, because of the journal-style, and out-of-orderness, but wasn’t sooo bad. the most difficult thing, i think, is getting through it without it ever forming a ‘proper’ plot – i imagine this puts people off.

for interesting perspective on dhalgren, it’s good to read delany’s autobiographical “heavenly breakfast’ .. there are some hints of influences in there.

It was also more difficult than his shorter works for me. Near the end it gets harder to follow. The one Delany book I couldn’t finish was Mad Man…

For some reason, this is hard for me... 4 years ago

and not just because my copy vanished in somebody’s towed car. I love Delany.) But for some reason I have never been able to slog all the way through Dhalgren
