Elisabeth was a friend of our family, having gone to teachers’ college with my grandmother. After my grandmother passed away, Elisabeth became a mentor to me. She also taught many of the local girls through a 4-H group. She had retired from school-teaching by the time I met her.
She had a homemade greenhouse, which had an earthy atmosphere like a tiny jungle. In spring there were vegetable and flower seedlings for the garden, and some orchids that she grew to sell to a florist. Elisabeth taught me about plants, and made it seem perfectly natural to grow my own plants and trees when I was older.
She also taught me sewing, mending, and cooking. I saw her make quilts, and years later I was inspired to make quilts myself. The things I learned from her were a wonderful gift. When I grew up and moved away, we kept in touch by letters, and I brought my daughters to visit her. One is named after her. Elisabeth lived til the age of 96, and was much loved in her community.
