I feel pretty well settled in at this point. Florida is finally feeling more like home, and less like some strange dream filled with sunshine and palm trees. I’m actually starting to bump into people that I know when I’m out around town and that rarely happened before in Michigan so I figure I can scratch this one off the list and make room for a new goal. :)

While I’m certainly a very outgoing person, sometimes I have a little trouble even getting out of the apartment. Once I get the social thing going, I’m golden and happy, but where do I even start? Typically in the past, I’ve had a job and that’s where I met most of the people I ended up being friends with. Here in Melbourne I’ll be starting from scratch and I have to admit, the idea of making friends that aren’t associated in some way with a crap job that you don’t care for just has to be a good thing – of course without the job, finding and making friends will be a greater challenge.
Someone from the psych department at FIT (where Patrick teaches) has a wife who is an artist and suggested that we connect. I wrote her an email introducing myself and asking her about her move here to Melbourne (her husband is new faculty this year as well). We’ll see if anything comes of it… and if not, well, I tried right? I also potentially have that co-op situation as a way to meet new people.
Baby steps.
