I know German a bit , thus it helps a lot, but pronunciation are quite hard.

I’m learning 10 verbs a day on the train. I’m hoping to learn more words so that I can make better sentences and can hopefully understand more of what’s going on. Wish me luck!
Dutch is very simple to learn for English speakers provided you’re willing to learn a some vocabulary and just a few additional grammatical concepts.
Dutch is certainly less grammatically complex than German, but the reason that I’ve come to love Dutch so much is that it occupies this interesting historical area close to Chaucerian english.
Linguistically, it’s a bit like finding a Neanderthal still alive that you can, as a homo sapiens, interact with.
The hard part is the self consciousness that most English-speakers feel when they try to hit the (in)famous guttaral Dutch hard “g”.
Well, yeah, that’s a big nasty sounding, and feels a bit dirty because we tend not to use these phonemes in English. But Portuguese and French make use of the resonating cavity of the sinuses with their nasals, so the idea that words can come from places other than your than what you already knew is a growth experience for you.
Dutch people are amazed to meet anyone not from NL who speaks dutch. It’s been more than once that I’ve listened in on a Dutch conversation as they assumed they were nigh encrypted ( once quite uh, graphic ).
A great deal of fine writings on art and Bougundian history are written in Dutch and to miss out on the letters of Van Gogh to his brother without the beauty of their native expression is a great pity.
my husband and I are moving to Holland for a year or so and I would love to learn the language for my brain power and to not be as much of a tourist!
It sounds absurd, but I am so keen to learn Dutch as soon as possible and can spare an hour a day to practice.
Garin Wind is contemplating life, and such.
Although I haven’t been taking classes, my friend Leslie has been acting as my personal tutor. I’d like to purchase Rosetta Stone at some point in the near future, but, in the mean time, I can count from one to ten; I know basic nouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and some adjectives; I’ve got a pretty good handle on basic questions-responses, day-to-day phrases, colors, and foods. Once I get the pronunciations and fundamentals down, I think it’ll be downhill from there.
I must say, though, that Dutch sentence structure is fucked. And article usage is nonsensical. With a background in French, Spanish, and Italian, getting a handle on Dutch has been pretty challenging. I think in terms of more, uh, logical languages.
My boyfriend is dutch and he continues to teach me words and phrases, but I think it would help a lot if I got my hands on some sort of program.
I’ve been looking at Rosetta Stone and wondering if it’s really worth the price. In the long run I think maybe it would be.
