Well, I did two 5 milers last week. One on Thursday and then another on Saturday Feb 23.
I hope everyone can run a five miler some day…good luck.

I am in an Airborne unit in the military. We are a reserve unit so we don’t do PT everyday like the big army.
But being that I am Airborne certified I am expected to run 5 milers all the time. It is a requirement even to get into the Airborne school.
Well at our last battle drill (late January) we did a 3.5 mile run early morning in the cold. It sucked…every second of it. 35* with 20 mph winds = misery when running.
I cramped at the 2 mile marker. I ran thru the pain because this is what is expected from an airborne trooper. We don’t have time to hurt!
I made the entire run…but fell out of formation (because of major leg cramps!) The point is that I did keep running and made it back home! I didn’t give up or quit!
Next month (Feb) we run a batallion 5 mile run. That is all 150 of us in a huge formation running at a 9 min mile pace for 45 mins!
I’ve been treadmill training for this event (due to bad knees, I don’t run on the streets if I can get away with it). I will tell you that 60/120’s will help your times and endurance.
60/120’s are you run flat out for 1 min, and walk at a fast pace for 2 mins, then sprint again. This is a great way to increase speed and endurance and get a great fast workout!
The army uses a “walk-to-run” program for new troops. I suggest you try that out…building your stamina until you can run 8 to 10 miles. Then 5 miles is just too easy!
Back in highschool I would run 1mile races on the track in 4 min 38 seconds (my PR) and two mile races in 10:12 (my PR in 2 miles).
Now, 15 years later, I am happy with a 2 mile time of 14 min or better on my PT test! My PR for 2007 was 13 min 31 sec for 2 mile PT test race. And that was on a HOT Balmy June day in N.C.!
So, keep your heads up! And that guy at 24 hour fitness was laughing at the T.V. show that was on the monitor above your head…not you!
CommAndrow – “I am Airborne!”
i’ve been running alot more, I have yet to try and go the full five, but I think im at about 2 miles or so…
i ran 2 at the park with my 2 kids in the jogging stroller today. I forgot how much more difficult it is to run with th jogging stroller. It was beautiful outside…. and then I walked 1/2 mile more with my 4 yr old my 2 yr old fell asleep in the jogger. Then I let the kids play on the playground.
i went to the gym and did 3 miles on the treadmil. I ran about 2 miles of that and ran a little over one mile of it without stopping. However when i was almost done a guy that works there walked by me and look down but at me starring and then made and oh my god face, followed by laughing. His buddy was about 5 feet away and was looking at me like why is he laughing at you. so needless to say i don’t know exactly why someone made fun of me but it is driving me crazy and my feelings are hurt. Honestly I sometimes hate 24 hour fitness. I love the childcare service and that is why i go there. I feel like a misfit there. I go to the gym looking like crap and leave looking worse perhaps that is why he laughed at me. I don’t see a point of dressing up to sweat like crazy… or make up and such. Honestly there are many ppl who go to the gym like me but he didn’t laugh at them he laughed at me. I am so wishing I was a witch right now. I would put a spell on him to make everyone who passed him look at him odd and leave him wonder WTH is wrong with me.
I ran today. I went 6 km… but I did stop. I figure that if Im going to reach this goal, I have to work. One thing I did do is gave it my all up the last hill all the wayt to my final destination. I was so tired and my body ached…but I made it and I felt great afterwards!
I’ll do again on Wednesday..
