start a ska band

Once had some friends who were really into the idea, but not one of them knew brass-playing people to form the band like we wanted to.

I lifted two movie themes recorded by the Skatalites:

- Third Man Ska (Theme from the Third Man)
- Guns of Navarrone (Theme from Guns of Navarrone)

My buddy is sending me the next three mp3s for me to transcribe, then we will have five tunes, then I’ll be ready to have a rehearsal. Moving forward!

This has been a pet project of mine for a while, and though moving slowly, is coming closer to fruition. I have a buddy in what will be the frontline helping me put it together, but I’m gonna have to take the bull by the horns to get this actually started. So here is the “To Do” list:

1. List of covers to transcribe – from a variety of sources, from classic ska recordings to start, but also include cross-over stuff like The Meters and The Headhunters.

2. Decide on band members—most likely will be myself, Aaron Birrell, Guido Perla and Lamar Lofton. We still need to scope out the guitar thing, but I have some ideas. Also possible addition of my brother Thomas on trumpet.

3. Set some deadlines, particularly for deciding on the other members and getting a first rehearsal together.

4. Come up with a name. No comments on this yet.

OK—I’ve officially transferred this from one of many little lists to my “Master” list here at 43 Things. More in a week or two.

I;ve been dying to start a ska band for well over a year till last week when I got a couple more people in it. In total we have
2 guitarists a bassist, a trumpet and drums

We have a guitar, bass, drummer, two trumpets, a trombone, and a vocalist. Our band is complete. We also have three songs down. Woohoo, I love crossing things off my list.

and we have two worthy contestants. We already have a drummer, bassist, two trumpets, a trombone, and a singer. We are also entering a competition. Wish us luck.

man i really want to start a ska band, i play guitar, but i want to learn trumpet, trombone, or saxaphone to play in a ska, does anyone know which would be the best to play??

So we got music picked out and enough people to play. All of the members are really awesome at their instruments. But we have about 5 people that want to play guitar. Who knows what will happen with that. I get to play trombone. It will rock.
