How to ride a cable car in san francisco
It made me
cold, but happy.

How I did it: I bought a ticket to San Francisco, got a map at the airport, went to the cable car stop early in the morning (pre lineups), and got on. Then I sat in the front, and hung off the side. It was a cooold day and my hands were turned into blue icicles, but taking a ride is kind of like going on a roller coaster because of all the crazy hills in that city. So for $5 it was totally worth it. Lessons & tips: Go in the morning. There's crazy lineups in the afternoon. Seriously, like 2 hour long waits, I've been told. Take it from Powell BART station all the way to the end of the line. And go to the Cable Car museum. It's free and you can see the large underground wires that pull the cable cars across the whole city! Resources: A book called Chaperon that I got from the airport was helpful. It wasn't available in English for some reason, but had maps and coupons and resources. |

How I did it: I bought a seven day muni pass for $26 at the Embarcadero BART stop, which allows you unlimited riding on buses, cable cars, etc. We then caught the first cable car at the California stop and took it to our hotel with luggage on board. However, the BEST ride is from California down to Ghiradelli Square since there is a HUGE drop right after Lombard Street. As luck would have it, the easiest way for me to get to CVS from my place of employment…is to take the cable car! It was super cool. Definitely one of those experience that manages to live up to the hype. Next stop: the other two lines!

I just heard on the news that they are going to put cable cars in Washington, DC. So, if you don’t want the roller coaster ride effect then everyone can come to DC in the future and ride on a less steeper hill. :)

I booked a hotel that is 2 blocks from a cable car line. So, we are DEFINITELY going to do this as a way to get around town. Its one of the things I didn’t get a chance to do last time I was there on business and was 2 blocks away from the Hydes Street station. :( However, this time I am going on vacation so I should definitely be able to work this into the schedule. :)
then I’ll buy my plane ticket and go visit my cousins in San Fran. And will totally ride a streetcar! I need to compare it to the ghetto Toronto version.
Growing up in SF, I took the cable car almost every day. With my student fast pass, I took it as part of my regular route to school and back home. And I never tired of going up/down those hills! The best one? Going down Mason Street (between Green and Union)!!!!

I just did this on Friday. So much fun! I’m not so sure I would do it again when I return… but it was defitely a must see/do :)
When I did this, I was with my family of six, so we had trouble finding spots for all of us. Later, we couldn’t and the conductor told us we’d better split our group up.
‘Okay, we’ll send the four-year-old on this one and the rest of us will take the next car.’
I keep holding off on this goal. I think I will do it if I ever leave the Bay Area. It will be my last touristy thing to do.
