How to get a summer job by scjohnson

How I did it: I wrote a stellar resume, made an account at snagajob.com and applied to over 20 places.  I got frustrated for weeks that I wasn't getting any interviews, then I remembered that a local grocery store advised students to apply upon graduation.  I applied online, called the same day to follow up, and two hours later I got an interview!  A few days after that I got offered the job.

Lessons & tips: For students:

  • apply to local places where you know other students find summer work.
  • don't be afraid to make follow up calls or even visit the hiring managers at their locations to introduce yourself.
  • for interviews, talk a lot about leadership positions you've held at school

    I definitely want to get a job.I just got an application form in KFC but not sure to take it and I also want to play sports this summer and next year .I do hospitakity in 5th form w/c would be an advantage. If I do get the job it might ruin my sports schedule.Ohhhh I had my app.form sched available for Mon,Wed,Fri w/c would be from 4-7 pm but my dad says I have to make it longer or take Sat shifts so that the employer takes me.Not sure the tennis and hockey scheds though!I don’t have a secured time commitment.

    so my friend kept telling me a few months ago about how some guy offered her a job working up at his construction site, and NONE of the other million places i applied were hiring, so i gave her a call and asked about it. she called him, we met with him to find out what to do, and it looks like we’re hired!
    hehe so i guess turning in applications is not the best way to get a job! its all about having connections with people…and then once your resume looks good, other people will actually like you lol.
    i’m really glad this worked out. $9/hr too! woot. and we choose our own hours…it sounds nice.
    we’re starting monday!
