I'm going to the movies alone ... so what? 5 months ago

I guess it was not such a hard thing for me to do.
I had been living on my own for a year so I was used to being alone. I just got my tickets, sit between two couples and watched the movie.

You just should not take yourself too seriously or you’ll miss out on some great stuff! :)

I’ve done this a few times – its not a big deal after you just get over it and sit down. Then the lights turn off and no one knows! I used to skip out on classes and go to the movies by myself… get to see all those films my friends didn’t want to watch. YAY!

Movies as a social activity 12 months ago

Ever since I was a kid, watching a movie was a social event. You simply did not do it by yourself. For the longest time, I wouldn’t watch movies by myself. Here in Colorado Springs, there is a movie theater which charges 75 cents admission on Tuesdays. I’d always beg my friends to go to a movie with me, get upset with them when they would cancel on me, see movies with people I didn’t really like that much, etc. I wanted to see Hotel Riwanda with a friend of mine, but he said it “wasn’t his kind of movie.” Later he rented it and told me it was awesome and I really should see it. Also whoever I was with would not really have a concept of time and we would get to the theater late; and they say things like “oh good, we only missed the first 5 minutes” (I don’t think this is good at all). Finally I decided that this was completely ridiculous and I simply started going on my own. I buy whatever snacks I want, I arrive as early as I want, I might see 2 or 3 movies if I want, every decision I make is unanimous! :-) Now that I’ve decided that I love to see movies by myself, everyone wants to go to the movies with me.

no one to ask you any questions or talk to you in the middle of the best part of the movie.

I go to movies all the time on my own – it is great you can see what you want – usually the movie theatre is empty anyway – well where I live it is – no-one takes a blind bit of notice

Go to the movies by myself 21 months ago

I’ve been to the movies by myself twice now. I think both times I was ether upset or bummed out and wanted to be alone. Its been a great experience for me both times to be able to take an adult “time out.” Plus, you don’t have to compromise. See the movie you want to see, when you want, sit where you want, and eat what you want. Highly recommended.

Whats the big deal? 21 months ago

You weren’t going to hold a conversation during the movie anyway. At least not much of one. You are going to be watching the movie. No reason to be embarrased about going to the movie alone. It’s not really much of a social event anyway. However, its always nice to have company too!

I thought it weird, at first…but it was fear-based. Then I gradually started seeing things on my own.. Little Miss Sunshine..all the artsy movies I enjoy and even a chick flick here and there. ;P No complaints from another party and I snuck in a sandwich from Panera and enjoyed. ^^ It was great.

Don’t be afraid to do this kind of thing—it shows tremendous independence and confidence!! Some may think it’s weird or “loner” like but they are afraid. Don’t buy into the fear.
