I think the opportunity to binf old, valued ,books that are part of family heirlooms is an attractive business opportunity.
If we can use leather engraved bunding it will be even more appreciated.I see a nice business opportunity here
How to learn bookbinding
How I did it: I chose bookbinding for my semester project. With the help of my art teacher, who supplied a LOT of materials, and a visit to a crafts store, I was able to begin. I just used some helpful online tutorials (not hard to find) and gave it a shot, first with some scrap thread and paper so I wouldn't waste the good stuff. I tried a few different methods, and I've now got three completed journals to present in January at the event.
Lessons & tips: It's a matter of understanding the methods, the order in which to do things, and getting the right materials. Like anything, it basically boils down to your ability to figure things out and your motivation to learn. After that, it's not too tricky. Folding the paper for signatures got a little time-consuming, and I did get a bit lazy after a while. But it's definitely possible to create a quality piece of work.
Resources: HUGE stack of mapboard in the school closet, visit to a crafts store, online tutorials, tips from my teacher, basic ability to learn.

I’m taking a couple of days of before I start studying again but I need something to do!!! I don’t want to spend those days in front of the TV so I’m going to try to learn bookbinding…lets see how it goes
I do love books, and have a few that I need to have repaired. Why not me, by golly? Should learn to take care of books before they go all to electronic format. Love the old ones, esp. the leather ones. What to do. Have read a lot of good suggestions below and will share as things progress.

I grew up with bookbinding. My dad is a self taught professional bookbinder. He taught my sister and I how to do it. I stopped doing it professionally years ago, but it is still in my heart, and I think I’d like to do it again.

There aren’t enough good bookbinders in the world today.
I have done a little bookbinding but I would like to develop the skill to a higher standard. I want to be able to bind a book so it opens flat as I would like to create my own sketchbooks.
Hi!
I would very much like to have my own business doing book-binding but need to know what materials/machines/training, etc. I need to do this? Also, where does one acquire the training for this & how much money will I need for the training? Plus, what are the total overall expenses incurred with starting a book-binding business?
Thanks for any help you can give me,
Chiquitha
i love funky, handmade books, but they blow my budget to teeny weeny pieces. so i guess if i could figure out how to do it myself i could have my book & eat it! so to speak…

Today I went to a bookbinding day class that my matting & framing teacher held with the neighbourhood grant she received.
So much fun! It was a great group of interesting ladies (I brought Kate) & we spent 4 hours making photo albums and getting to know each other over eclectic teacups and almond cake. I feel quite proud of my book – I should fill it with lovely photos now.
I took a bunch of notes and photos as we went along and would really like to try this again on my own. Maybe after learning to make my own paper.
Seems like it would be neat and keeps coming up in my brain, but don’t know if it is too hard.. how to start at home as a hobby. Just starting to look at.
