How I did it: We had never adopted a rescue pup before, but we went to our local shelter and met some dogs. This little pup had a sad story, and we thought our sweet old golden retriever would be a good influence on her. We filled out the paperwork to adopt her. They had her spayed and we picked her up the next day. We gave both her and our old dog a lot of love and attention, and they are getting along already. She is a curious, affectionate girl and a great addition to our family. Read how I did it… 1 month ago
We brought her home last night. She was shaking like a leaf when I carried her inside. In the backyard, Ginger bounded toward her at full speed and scared her even more. G. took Ginger for a walk and I fed Moxie some chicken, which she loved. We played a little fetch, which she loved also. She and Ginger were wary of one another at first, but are already peacefully coexisting.
One nice surprise: she is housebroken! We weren’t sure if she would be. She had one accident right at first, and may have one or two more, but for the most part she is taking care of business in the yard like a champ.
Moxie got fixed on Monday, and I was worried she would constantly be biting at the incision. She itches at it occasionally, but stops when I tell her to stop. She really is a good girl.
She already loves to curl up right by me wherever I am. We have been lavishing attention on Ginger, too, though! I’m about to go take Ginger for a walk now.
I’m not going to walk Moxie, because she keeps sneezing and I think she may have a cold! If it keeps up, we’ll take her to the vet.
I still miss Pumpkin terribly. But I love the new dog, and love our old dog. I felt so happy cuddling with them last night I thought my heart would burst :) 1 month ago
We’re going to name her that because even though she is little, and a tiny bit skittish now, we suspect she’s going to have a lot of attitude. (I think she may be a rough-coated Jack Russell terrier and Chihuahua mix? Maybe? Some kind of terrier mix!)
Here’s what the shelter said about her.
If sad stories always make you cry, you might want to grab a tissue. My tale seems to bring tears to some eyes around here. Must admit that sometimes I have felt like crying a bit myself, but try to buck up and take things in stride…
Though I am only six months old, I have been bounced from owner to owner. (Notice that the word “home” is not how I can describe my living situations.) In just one of my months, I lived with 3 different families. No one in any of the places I shared with humans spent time showing me what they expected from a dog. I knew that I was supposed to be doing something to please them and get them to love me, but had no clue what to start with.
Gradually I became more fearful, never knowing what might cause me to be banished or when it might happen. when there were young kids in the places I lived, they were noisy and rough with me. That scared me even more. In a couple of the places I lived, there were older kids and they thankfully treated me with more compassion. My last people surrendered me to the shelter because I was “too active.” Guess they just did not understand that puppies are puppies and have a bit of frisk. Whatever the reasons for my rejections, my heart has been bruised many times over my first six months.
Generally, the folks out here have begun to help me feel a little better about myself. They say that they will look for owners who are willing to do extra socialization with me and who will take the time to patiently train me in being a good house dog. They assure me that when someone comes to adopt me, they will make sure that I have a chance to slowly sniff them over and approach them at my own speed.
More than anything in the world, I hope there is someone out there who will love me enough to help my heart bruises heal. If you have the magic to make that happen, please come soon. The faster we get started, the quicker my life can get back on track.
Ginger met Moxie, and they didn’t have any issues toward one another (though Ginger was a little distracted by wanting to make friends with the shelter volunteers.) Ginger is so sweet and has the patience of a saint, so she’s good even with dogs 1/10th her size. :)
Moxie’s getting fixed today, and we’re taking her home tomorrow! We wanted to go ahead and get a pup now because we have time at home all next week to work with her. I need to get her a crate tonight…Ginger has one (we never use it) but it is too huge for this girl, who still needs house training. 1 month ago
