Friday turned out to be a really hot day, and evening, here in Sacramento—perfect mint julep weather! My fiancee and I got all dressed up and walked downtown to Ella Dining Room & Bar, where we each ordered one. The cocktail waitress had never heard of a mint julep, but apparently the bartender was familiar with it, and we got our wish.
We had guessed it would be sweeter than it actually was, and I think I would have liked it mintier as well (but I have a high tolerance for mint). So I wouldn’t say it was the best drink I’ve ever had, but it was nice, and certainly worth trying.
I don’t think my travels will ever bring me to the Kentucky Derby, but just in case they do, I guess now I know what to expect! And I know what Dr. McCoy was talking about, too. 3 years ago

Tomorrow night my fiancee and I are going to try this at Ella Dining Room & Bar in downtown Sacramento. It looks like a really nice place, and they claim they can indeed make a mint julep, so let’s hope they make a good one! 3 years ago

My fiancee is down with this and says he’ll call around and find a local bar that makes them (I’m not exactly an alcohol expert and don’t know how unusual this drink might be). If I finish all my schoolwork by Friday night, we’re going out to Thai food for dinner and trying mint juleps afterward! Totally can’t wait. 3 years ago

I’ve never had one, but it just sounds good. One of these days I’ve got to try it. After all, it was Dr. McCoy’s favorite drink on Star Trek.... 3 years ago

...I ordered a mint julep last night at the Zig Zag cafe. I think this might be my favorite julep yet. It was sweet but not syrupy, refreshingly minty and not too boozy-tasting, although I got totally trashed. Woops!
So far here’s my rundown:
Frontier Room: best presentation
Bleu Bistro: grody
Studio 410: tasty but not exceptional
Zig Zag Cafe: best flavor
I still need to try King Fish Cafe. 6 years ago

I consumed a Mint Julep yesterday at the Frontier Room and it was everything I dreamed it would be. The waitress thought I ordered a “mint tulip,” which made me a bit nervous, but luckily the bartender knew what he was doing. I love the silver cup it comes in. It is a very refreshing summer drink, but very strong. 6 years ago

I am currently obsessed with mint juleps. I’ve never had one. If you know of a bar in Seattle that serves a good one let me know. Preferably a place where the men wear light-colored summer suits and the women carry parasols. 6 years ago
