Small trinket box 11 months ago

Want to make a small trinket box to learn more about box building, joinery, finishing, maybe even carving, and learn to use my “new” table saw.

    temporarily 20 months ago

It went onto my “someday/maybe” list and I want my 43things to be active projects now.

    learn woodworking 2 years ago

I would really like to start making furniture. I don’t know of any local classes so I guess books, books, and more books. Maybe then I can build a bookshelf to put them all on!

Dreams to dream 2 years ago

I remember, once upon a time, watching a show or reading an article where I learned that carousel horses could be made from wood. the Visual fascination of watching a horse-my own horse!emerge from a block or series of blocks of wood. Sanding it would be like currying. Painting would be a labor of love-and I could add as many jewels as were necessary.

Woodworking seems like a good skill to have, in general. Maybe Scott’s dad would be willing to teach me.

Defining the goal 2 years ago

I’ll consider this done when I’ve made a bookcase, a coffee table, and a night stand. And maybe a trunk.

    new project 2 years ago

Started my woodworking class and am making a small entertainment center. I’ll post pics when its done. Hardest thing so far is getting used to the equipment and the fact that nothing measures out to a round inch, everything is an 1/8, 1/16/ 5/8 whatever so attention to detail is a must. Anyway its fun, im the youngest person in the class and also the only one who hasn’t taken the class before, ill post pics soon.

    boxes, boxes 2 years ago

I recently completed my first real woodworking project with some help from one of my best friends. I made two wooden letter/keepsake boxes from spalted sycamore and spruce. One was for my daughter to hold letters I write to her (See LettersFromDad.com) and the other was a wedding present for my Bride. Both were very pleased. Hopefully this will be the first of many projects.

Why I want to do this 2 years ago

I’ve become interested in woodworking/ carpentry recently because, like most people it feels good to create something, and to accomplish something no matter how small. I’ve been in the AF for 8 years and I fix broke jets just so they can break the next day. The feeling of accomplishment wears off quickly when you know someone is going to come along and break what you just spent hours or days fixing. Woodworking is something you can get your hands on and feel, you can watch it progress and the finished product if done right will last. So hopefully this will be something I can stick to and learn right. The local community college offers classes on woodworking and construction, so hopefully I can find the time to attend the classes. How are you guys learning about woodworking? self teach, apprentice, school?

    great hobby 2 years ago

Keeps me from absorbing too much TV and internet.

And with the tools available these days, you don’t have to be tremendously skilled to produce quality furniture, at a fraction of the cost of buying it.

Definitely worth trying…if you’re just starting, I recommend setting your mind to build something to give to somebody close to you as a gift.

I took a basic woodworking class at night, bought a set of plans and set my mind to build a blanket chest/bench for my wife as a wedding gift. That provided great motivation. Unfortunately, now I have a huge list of requests from friends & family!
