ride my bike to work once a week

I’ll bike to work each Tuesday. I can’t take the dog out for a walk on Tuesdays anyway ‘cause I don’t get home until after dark, and parking is near impossible on Tuesdays ‘cause the Tulane Children’s Health bus parks in our parking lot.

I’ll put a dollar in my savings account for each one way trip I make, plus trips to church.

Once it gets warmer and lighter, maybe, or at least on professional development days. Otherwise I have to get up at 5:45 to do it and I don’t exactly feel safe in my neighborhood when it’s dark.

Also, I have to admit that now that gas is cheaper I’m not nearly so motivated to bike everywhere.

I’ll definitely start biking to church again now that football season is over and I don’t have to get back home in time for Saints games. I like it when tourists take my picture from the St. Charles streetcar, courtesy of all the beads on my bike basket.

because it’s been so rainy. But I think I am getting panniers for christmas and I am super excited to ride my bike to work once a week and to the gym.

Last night I read reviews of bike shops and decided the Bike Gallery was the way to go. They have free clinics and the store by my house is managed by a lady. So today I went and put a bike on layaway. I was going to buy it out right but they didn’t take the card I had. But as soon as I get my kicker check it will be mine! Now I am sort of having a freak out about spending the money, but it was the right thing to do.

I get a kicker check, I think (hope) and I am going to use it to buy a bike. I can’t wait!

I am going to have to GET a bike. I have to figure out how I can trade that one I have.

I don’t really have any excuse for not doing this. Work is only 5 or so miles from home and it doesn’t often rain, except in winter.

My excuses are that I don’t have a good commuter bike – just a fancy road bike – so it feels like a whole production with extra shoes and all that.

Second is I tend to work till well after dark and I don’t have a decent light or feel particularly safe even with one.

Last, I have to dress pretty well at work and we don’t have showers. This is why my goal is once a week – I’m going to shoot to ride on “casual Fridays” – but still, it limits my happy houring options.

Seriously, my commute is 22 miles each way and I am now riding my bike 1-2 per week to work. I usually bring my work clothes to the office the day before I ride my bike, so I can clean up and change before I start working in the morning. It’s not effortless, but I can’t think of a better way to exercise, save money on gas, pollute a bit less and have fun all at once.
