Wondering about my options... 6 months ago

So lately I’ve been wondering whether I should bother trying to dye the rest of my hair close to my natural hair color, or just deal with having two toned hair until it grows out. The hair that WAS deep red (see my picture) a few months ago has now faded and it’s pretty much just strawberry blonde now, with about 5 inches of my natural (light brown) hair on top. It’s because bleached hair doesn’t hold onto color. So, I don’t know if it would be worth it to bother trying to dye it all the same color, if the bleached hair would just gradually lose the color anyway. I’m okay with having two-toned hair. As somebody who rapidly gets bored of her hair, I’m really, really used to it.

Also, it doesn’t help that my best friend really doesn’t like my natural hair color. She’s like, “It’s so mousy, it’s practically grey”. I call it a “light golden brown” and she says “eh, it’s more like blueish brown grey”. If I look close at it though, I still have natural blonde strands (I used to be pure blonde as a child). I think my natural hair color is fine though. I’m pretty sure the last time my hair was totally natural colored was senior year. In my prom photos it’s its natural color, and my hair looks just fine. Sure, it’s a little mousy but I’d rather it be mousy and healthy than blonde and dead and frizzy…

i think i used to be somewhat blonde-ish, but the last time i actually caught even a glimpse of my natural hair color was freshman year… it has been just about every shade of red and brown since then, and i can’t help but wonder if i might be able to afford a CAR by now had i not spent all the money i did on the goddamn dead shit growing out of my head. so i gave this little rant to my hair person and she did her best to dye it back to my natural (after many other failed attempts that ended up some shade of brown), putting in some sandy highlights so that it would grow out more unobtrusively. it’s been about 4 months since then, and people are now asking me if this is my natural hair color… really now, people, do you expect me to have been able to grow out my hair in four months?! but it still makes me smile :). and it makes me feel like i have oodles of mullaaaaaaaaa.

it will just be so refreshing (once all the highlights and dye and damage have grown out) to be able wash my hair and have it feel completely. CLEAN.

So, I’m literally at the point where it’s been so long that I’ve been messing with my hair color that I found a picture of myself from freshman year of high school and I went “Oh, so THAT’S my natural hair color!”

For years now I’ve just been constantly playing with the color. Usually I dye it shades of red. In fact, I’ve been dying it red on and off ever since 7th grade. As seen in the photo, it’s bright red right now. Before that it was blonde. Before that it was like three different shades of red from being home-dyed so many times. Late summer of ‘07 it was bright magenta. You get the picture I think.

Actually this last time I tried to get my hair dyed chocolate brown. Somehow it came out red. The hair stylist said (at least, I think she said – she doesn’t speak good english) that because it was blonde you can’t go straight to brown or something. I was sad because it’s been red so many times before, and at least a chocolate brown would be closer to my natural hair color.

And well there’s also the damage I’m doing to my hair, of course. It’s been bleached and dyed, but on top of that I flat iron it all the time because it’s naturally curly. Anyway, you get the picture.

I think, but am not 100% positive, that my natural hair color is a neutral slightly gold toned medium brown and eventually my goal is to somehow go back to that color. =)

I lubb it.

Just did this last night 4 years ago

I dyed my hair last night back to VERY VERY close to my natural hair color so there shouldn’t be any grow out and I love it! Yeah! I was a little leary of doing this because I thought after 20+ years of bleaching my hair I would freak out as to how dark my natural color is, but I didn’t and I love it! Even more I love how much money I am going to save by not having to retouch the roots every 6 weeks or so!
