And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown up, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he saw an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, one of his brethren. And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he smote the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. And he went out the second day, and, behold, two men of the Hebrews were striving together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? Thinkest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely the thing is known.
Exodus 2:11-14
Well, one would say “I never killed someone and hid him/her in the sand”. Well, what is the difference with Mose’s act and insulting a fellow human being?
This could be attested by Matthew 5:22:
“but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell of fire.”

Michelangelo, Moses (1514)

Why not this hour?
But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken through. Therefore be ye also ready; for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Could prayer exist without empathy?

A quote showing prayer pre-dates the biblical times:
Scholars from the Oriental Institute have been excavating at Iraqi sites since 1903. One famous find came from a temple site at Tell Asmar, northeast of Baghdad, where Oriental Institute archaeologists unearthed a cache of statuettes dated to about 2500 B.C. Their hands clasped in prayer, these sculptures of Mesopotamian men and women worshipping their gods

Empathy is commonly defined as one’s ability to recognize, perceive and directly experientially feel the emotion of another.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empathy
_1. the intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another.
2. the imaginative ascribing to an object, as a natural object or work of art, feelings or attitudes present in oneself: By means of empathy, a great painting becomes a mirror of the self._

Empathy manifest itself through intellectual means and/or feelings.
What are the links [and differences] between empathy and love?

Being attentive to others, and acting upon this attention, seems to me fundamental for a human being.
In being attentive to others, do I use all I am given, and multiply it, make it fructify? Well, the answer is: no.
The Last Judgment – Hieronymus Bosch
Watch therefore, for ye know not the day nor the hour. For it is as when a man, going into another country, called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one; to each according to his several ability; and he went on his journey. Straightway he that received the five talents went and traded with them, and made other five talents. In like manner he also that received the two gained other two. But he that received the one went away and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.
Now after a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and maketh a reckoning with them. And he that received the five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: lo, I have gained other five talents. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord. And he also that received the two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: lo, I have gained other two talents. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord. And he also that had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou didst not sow, and gathering where thou didst not scatter; and I was afraid, and went away and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, thou hast thine own.
But his lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I did not scatter; thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back mine own with interest. Take ye away therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him that hath the ten talents.
For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not, even that which he hath shall be taken away. And cast ye out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 25:13-31

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the watersGenesis 1:1-2
That is beyond my imagination: the Spirit of God moving upon the face of the waters.
Who is He? One can understand God. One can understand Jesus. Who understands the Spirit?
Is He the essence of being attentive to others?
