I’ve been to a lighthouse before, but I’m still not crossing this out because firstly, the lighthouse was no longer in operation, and secondly, it was pretty much a part of a group package tour – crowded and done in a hurry.
In other words, it just didn’t feel right. I need something more genuine. I want something more surreal.
So I won’t be crossing this out of my list until the day comes when I actually get to the top of a lighthouse that still operates.

I’m not even sure why I want to do this but I think it would be an amazing experience. But there are no lighthouses nearby so this will take some planning.
How does someone go about doing this? Do they let people just come in and go to the top? Or is there a tour of some sort? I haven’t even looked into this at all yet.

it has to be the right time, sun rise with a steaming coffee in hand
falling night, a twilight visit right as the circling light’s turned on
or maybe even midnight, see how close the heavens reallly are

angniks had a nice birthday...thank you :)
My husband was in the Coast Guard for Pete’s sake. If there’s a lighthouse anywhere nearby, you can believe we’re going to the top. I like the Cape Hatteras one alot though, I was up it twice, once in it’s original location, and once when they moved it down the beach.

this huge lighthouse is only 10 minutes drive from my house in the beautiful seaside village of Kommetjie. Going up the lighthouse was good, raph esp. loved it. better still is driving down to The Kom just before sunset, watching the sun go down (and the surfers – almost as pretty:)) and then waiting for the light to bleed out of the sky until the lighthouse starts up. sitting on the rocks while the massive beam of whiteness zooms over you. smelling the sea and the kelp. great stuff.

Dungeness Spit Lighthouse. Its not a real tall lighthouse so the climb wasn’t too bad, but the view was great!

At the end of May, my boyfriend and I have reservations to do this—and to stay overnight. I’m so excited!
