If you’re thinking about tattooing, don’t go to Mike Burford/Ed/Old Poop & Rudy/Jackelope/Pinky’s in Bryan, Texas. These guys have been ripping people off (employees, apprentices, and customers) for well over 10 years.
They will take in virtually anyone without caring about their ability or potential as a tattoo artist. They’ll work these people incredibly long hours (cleaning, building needles, distributing flyers, or just hanging around), and teach them just enough for them to do a couple small, poor tattoos on the few paying customers that come in. Practically all the money anyone makes as a poorly trained tattooist goes towards teaching fees. This continues until a person wises up and leaves unless they are the one in a million person who will accept this raw deal and be able to teach themselves how to tattoo while they’re at it.
But don’t listen to me—or them.

Or just pick up the yellow pages and call a bunch of tattoo studios in Austin (where they used to operate under the names of Carnival Productions/Capitol City Tattoo). It won’t take long to find several people who will confirm everything you’ve read here and in the Rip-Off Report. And worse!
If you are still looking for, or are interested in obtaining a Tattoo apprenticeship, then I have some information that you might be interested in. I am an Old-School Tattooer, and I own two “State of the art” tattoo studios in Bryan / College Station, Texas, (the home to Texas A&M University, and Blinn College). I also operate one of the oldest and most comprehensive Tattoo / Piercing Apprenticeship available to the general public. For a detailed description of this program, please visit our web-site;

If you have any questions about this program, or any comments, IO would be glad to hear from you. I also invite you to visit our MySpace sites:

We heartily congratulate NIKO who has just completed his Two-Year Apprenticeship this May 1st. Niko has worked diligently for the last two years, and has progressed to become a fine custom tattooist, and already has numerous sets of full sleeves, back, and chest pieces to his credit, and has a full appoint book as we speak. Niko has been a source of inspiration to his fellow artists, and apprentices, and is ready to “Step-Up to the Plate” for the next phase of his Tattoo Career. Niko is going to take a three month sabbatical this fall to travel to several tattoo conventions, and to visit some other outstanding studios across the country, and see what the other artists and studios are now doing. We are also looking into a few Guest artist spots at some of the better custom tattoo studios to expand his professional experience. We are looking forward to Niko’s return to his post as the Manager, and lead Custom Artist of Toon Towne Tattoos.
K.C. , an Apprentice with 8 months in the, program is now managing our studio in the Northgate Adult Entertainment district, Pinky’s New School Tattoos and exotic Piercing across from the main campus of Texas A&M University. K.C. is doing truly awesome work now, and will graduate his 1-Year apprenticeship, when he plans to return to his native California to work in a studio near his home.
Be sure to check-out all of the work that has been done by these talented artists on our space site; www.myspace.com/instituteoftattoo, as well as their personal sites that you will find on the Friends list. We are sure that you will be impressed. We appreciate your comments on this work.
Again, thanks for your time, and we hope to be hearing from you again real soon.

I have 28 tattoos and many more piercings..I would love to learn more about either..I have done a bit of both but really need to have experience with the pros. I have had a lot of helpful advice from a lot of major tattoo studios and can personally show a portfolio and be a slave to your shop. i am looking preferably for a free apprenticeship, but willing to go with someone of the right price. I have already learned a bit from books, cds, and videos as well as tips from pros and personal experience with being tattooed and pierced. I can make stencils and know the basics of making needles and putting a machine together. I also know the basics of working with a machine. Please feel free to email me at iguchigirl@sbcglobal.net
i live in Penndel Pa and my dream is to become a tattoo artist..i need help making my dream come true..but then again i heard its hard for a female to become a tattoo artist…i dont care what they say..ill still try!
I live in Vegas..I have been into art since i was a wee bit. I knew several other artist..some who could blow me out of the water and otherz that could not come close to me….Being a female in a mans world also provided a challenge..I have drawn up loads of tattoo designs for friends and it always seemed odd to be always the tattoo designer and not a tattooist. I’m some what reserved so i was a bit hesitant to approach a tattoo shop with apprentice inquires…Recently, a friend and I went to a few tattoo shops..I was encountered by majority guys or more like kids whom were gushing with higher than thou attitudes….
Come on people..Please some one anyone Tell me Vegas has more to offer in the tattoo department….well im little discouraged but luckly im freaking hard headed…ill keep looking

shyuz2203 asks,
“whats the best way to ask an artist to take you under his/her wing? it seems like an awful lot to me, and I fear looking like an idiot just walking up into a place and asking this.”
