Recently, someone sent me an email that really hurt my feelings, because it didn’t allow me to respond to their accusations – just asked that I never contact them again.
I decided I wanted to respond, anyway, even if they never read it. I wrote several versions of the the response, finally ending with one that showed empathy for the person, since obviously the pain that other people had caused them was so incredibly great that even though I am not what they think I am, because I have any resemblance to that person he decided not to talk to me.
Because I really am sorry. And I do want the person to get well. Even though I am hurt and angry, I made my concern for them the focus.
I am one of those sorts of people who says what’s on their mind, who doesn’t self edit all that much. I get myself into a lot of trouble. This goal isn’t about lying, or misleading people. It’s learning to speak the truth through a filter of love – love for humanity, for my friends and family, for the universe. I need to stop speaking in a language of pettiness, hatred, and smarminess.
