How to write my personal statement
How I did it: I started to write it about four days before it was due. I just wrote a really horrendous one to start with. It was way over the world limit, filled with cliches, and completely disorganized. The next day I cleaned it up and played with it a bit. On the day before it was due I eliminated some length and made my final adjustment. I just had my little sister read it because I felt it was too personal to let anyone else read.
Lessons & tips: Start early. When you finish, set it aside for a few days, then reread it. Change anything that strikes you in a negative way. Be honest and don't get all cheesy.
Resources: I mainly used Princeton Review and collegebasics.com. The latter of the two kept trying to get me to purchase the e-book, which irritated me, but otherwise was helpful.

Ravachu is setting goals
I have been working on my personal statement for a whole month now and it’s SO nearly there now! It’s been read and torn apart hundreds of time by loads of different people!
I’ve started from scratch 8 times now and I have finally found a framework that makes sense. I can’t wait to finish it!!
Trees are Green is back, after a long absence.
My 6th form tutor keeps going on at me about getting this done.
It’s just so difficult!
Maybe it’s because of what my classics teacher said – English women aren’t brought up to talk about themselves in a hugely positive light. We tend to steer more on the modest side, apparently.
But that doesn’t help me when I NEED to get this done!!!
scary that so many people have already done it or started..
this is the most important on the to do list!!
I think I’m almost there with my personal statement, I’ve managed to do some rewording to cut down my once 1000 (characters w/ spaces) over the limit essay to now 200 (characters w/ spaces) over the limit. A good achievement!
I’m going to be e-mailing off my statement to my uncle who has been a sixth form tutor for years and understands the system, hopefully he’ll be able to give me a few pointers, and then there’s also my tutor and teachers when I return to school in a week or so.
I never really realised how hard it would be, but am I glad I started early! I’d hate to be in the position now of just starting out, I think I’d have been in panic mode already.
Good luck to all who are doing this task… you’ll be thankful when it’s done!
I’m progressing really well, in fact I’m onto my third draft and they just keep getting better.
The only problem I’m having is I want to say far too much! As with my second draft, I’m still 1000 characters w/ spaces over the limit. The only thing that’s changed is I’ve cut the ‘flowery’ language and made the statement more about my chosen degree.
It’s a slow process, but I’m sure I’ll be pleased with the final outcome!
I’ve finally completed my first draft of my personal statement, and you don’t know how good that feels!
Most of yesterday was spent working on it, and I’m proud of what I have so far… it’s not perfect, definitely no where near complete, but it’s a start. There’s sections that I need to add, and maybe generally be a little more specific, a have, on the odd occasion been a little vague.
This week, as part of sixth form, we’re having a day on UCAS applications, how it’ll last a whole day I have no idea, but I wanted to go with something, and not be the one who hadn’t yet thought about what I might write.
Hopefully I’ll be able to continue, tweaking it here and there and will have it ready for September!
I’m getting there… I managed to write the ‘personal’ side to the personal statement, mainly concentrating on the things I’ve done.
I’m yet to do my work experience, so I’m saving the ‘why the subject interests me’ until later.
Just pleased that I have something to start with!
Well, having just been to the University of Leeds open day, I have found this new drive and motivation to start on my first draft tomorrow!
It was the realisation that I had found a university that I could truly see myself being a part of, and a course that was perfect for me in every way.
Needing three A’s at A level isn’t going to be easy, and realising that along with this I need to be an outstanding candidate amongst all the other applicants only reminds me how important my personal statement will be… after all, this is what will get me an offer, interviews are a thing of the past.
