I saw one in 1979 in Washington State. There was a large gathering of witnesses at the Stonehenge replica on a bank of the Columbia River just outside of Goldendale.
The 70’s were very interesting anyway, but this was honestly radical. There were even Druids there. We used special glasses to look at the sun. The buildup was the best part. The actual eclipse went pretty quick.
If you get a chance to see one…SEE ONE!
Did this in 2003 when there was a total eclips in a town called Ceduna in SA. We drove 700km and stayed with my aunt and over 10 000 people came to the town to watch the eclipse from all over the world.
