be a better activist

I started a victory garden. I’m printing a zine. I’m dumpster-diving. I’m doing all the things I feel are sort of cliche in activists, and I’m okay with that. :D Where I live, you don’t get a lot of chances to go to protests or anything, so the most I could do politically is write letters to the government.

But I think the people have to be educated first. I’m going to write speeches, make pamphlets and flyers, have fundraisers, things like that… educating the public about the issues, giving them the facts… I sound really stupid right now, but whatevs. That’s going to be my first step.

But I’m doing things! Even if they’re small acts of rebellion, they’re still baby steps towards my goal.

i want to get more involved! there was a time when my life was full of protests, commitees, meetings – a time when it felt that my every act was a political statement. i’d like to slowly become more involved once again, particularly with the many fabulous local groups here in my city… my areas of activism centre on anarchy, veganism, feminism, environmentalism, pro-peace and pro-choice advocacy, as well as queer rights. i guess my very existence is a tribute to all of my politics, as i at least maintain my life to be one centered on all of these ideals. but still, i know there is a lot more i could do. i want to actively make more of a difference.

I’m trying to find a group to call home, and am going to some meetings. I’m done with my hiding online I think—I need to be out in the real world again, knowing and working actively with other people who give a fuck.

It felt great.

Salt Lake mayor, Rocky Anderson is awesome. Too bad he’s not our president. Things would be A LOT better.

... apartheid, but there I did little more than be a conscientious objector against military conscription, and help other conscientious objectors through two legal organizations. Today I am part of a labour movement. The key to better activism, I am convinced, is a good organization.

i do try to take my stand on whats right.

I try to be very conscious of opportunities to share my knowledge and opinions about issues that I am passionate about, but I know I can do better. I’d like to live in a place with more activist activity. The Tampa area seems void when it comes to things such as this.
