i don’t usually have a problem doing up to 32 on flat on my good side, but on pointe i can’t do much more than 16, mostly because i travel so much on each releve. plus i just don’t like the way my fouettes look, i think my arms look spastic and my working leg doesn’t usually get all the way to a la seconde before the releve.
i was sugar plum this year in nutcracker and we have the option of doing either 12 or so fouettes or doing some kind of pique manege in the coda of the grand pas. i really wanted to do the fouettes but my supporting foot (and pointe shoe) would get too fatigued after the pas de deux and coda to do the releves well, so i had to do the piques instead. next year i will do the fouettes, though. i won’t let myself not work on them.
i would love to be able to this… but the most i’ve ever gotten (on pointe) was 10. (i’m not very good) i’m going to keep practicing
Yeah, I’ll be happy with 16 fouettes, for now at least. The ankle of my supporting leg is giving me problems and that’s not the kind of ankle you’d like to do 32 fouettes on. Also, the rest of my body knows I can’t do more than 16 at this time, because I suddenly lose it after 16 turns.
One day, when my ankle heals, maybe I’ll be able to do 32 fouettes again. Or maybe not. The important thing isI work with what I’m capable of and not go nuts trying. I really don’t want to go nuts just over this. 16 fouettes is fine, I dance beautifully enough for it not to matter anyway.
i neeeeeeeeeeed to do this, so im going to practice them everyday after class
I’ve never been able to complete 32. I was only tasked to do fouette turns in performance three times in my life – the first were 16 fouette turns in the Le Corsair pas de deux, we did the Margot Fonteyn version and she only did 16. I completed those, no problem. The second time is for Black Swan pas de deux from Swan Lake, I had done my 32 fouettes in rehearsals, though I was never confident about them. In performance, I did clean and stable sixteen, then I somehow fell off my pointe and ad libbed a pique turn series for the remaining 16 counts. That was frustrating.
If I’m to dance the Don Q pas de deux, I’ll have to do 32 fouettes again. I have to get used to them now, even if the show is in December, I just need to complete them. If I can do that, I can do anything.
Today, in ballet class, I went for 32 fouettes and finished well, pulling in on a double pirouette. I was in soft shoes, and not en pointe but I feel very good. I’m off to a good start.
