I am currently working on a co-authored paper on GIS analysis we are going to attempt to get published soon. I sat down the other day and cranked most of it out, and now it is a matter of embellishing it and proofing it!

This is something I definitely want to do, but it isn’t a top priority right now. I need to graduate, and to focus on my job, which is not a paper-publishing-oriented job. I’ll pick this goal up in a while (maybe a year from now?) when I have some other things in my life sorted out.

...I’m giving up on this. I didn’t end up in a workplace where this is highly valued. There are easier things I can do for professional development that are valued here—particularly speaking. Any one want an outside speaker about emerging technologies at your library?
the truth is, if you’re wanting to move up in the academic world, this is the gig for you. one article can open up doors to wealth and fame. Okay, neither of them, but being cited in someone’s dissertation is pretty cool, isn’t it?

It turns out I was wrong last week when I thought I hadn’t won the student paper competition. I received word today that I won. Either they were running behind their time schedule or somebody backed out and I’m the runner up. I’m not as happy about this as I thought I would be because I had really adjusted to the idea of not having to do all of that work right now. Now, my summer looks way over-scheduled….OTOH, this was and is my best shot at meeting this goal, so it’s time to call in that 43 Things spirit and get going.

Bad news on this front. I didn’t win the graduate student paper competition I entered—the date has passed when I would have heard had I won. On a positive note, this means I can do the project more on my own time schedule.

This morning I entered the annual Graduate Student Paper Competition associated with the Missouri Library Association conference. Winners get a waiver of the conference registration fee, a $100 honorarium, and a 25-minute slot to present the results at the conference in October.
To enter, I just had to write up the abstract. I submitted my idea for a study that I believe would be publishable in a peer-review journal. I’ll pursue the study whether or not I win the competition, but winning would give me a deadline—as a student, I find deadlines very useful for structuring my time to complete projects.
So cross your fingers, send postive vibes, include me in your prayers, or employ your favorite method of virtual support. This is a goal that will require a bit of luck along with effort.
