Another large shelving unit relocated 18 months ago

Added another 210 books to the del.ici.ous database, and found 4 duplicates (so far) which can go to the BookCrossing basket at Panera. I should be able to do at least one more unit, or as many as 3 today.

I’m finding some really good books I’d forgotten about, so I was glad to run across them again.

Have to move out of my office... 18 months ago

in order to make room for my daughter’s arrival in August. I’m supposed to be looking into the cost of finishing out the portable building we’re buying in order to get me completely out of the house. In the meantime, I’m making room for my various shelving units to go elsewhere in the house so that I don’t have to have them packed away in the heat, which will destroy them if left long enough.

Yesterday, I moved the recipe books back into the dining room (after I cleared off the work table and sent it to the living room). Then, I filled the wine rack with our small collection, and also put several glasses back (clearing a little bit of space in our regular cabinets). Then, I moved some board and glass block shelving and filled that with Permanent Collection paperbacks. Decided to catalog all these, and added 158 to the database. Not sure if I’ll go back and do the recipe books soon (some do not have ISBNs), but that can wait until all the other shelving is done.

I did a little shelf-shifting 2 years ago

and got a bunch (especially my son’s spillover) off the floor. None added to the database lately, but maybe this weekend.

Added another 150 books 2 years ago

That was nearly all the books on my original hallway case (all but what’s on top an a few dated reference-type books). Still working on the other hallway unit, then will start entering the books in my office.

Another drop in the bucket 2 years ago

I added 52 books to my Delicious Library db (all of the parenting books on top of the hallway shelves) and I also aded 3 cds to my music “shelf.” I might as well catalog those, too; it might make it easier for me to work on the “add cd music to ipod” goal.

Last weekend 2 years ago

I bought the full license for the library software and proceeded to add another 100 books or so (which was a very small drop in the bucket) into the computer . I also did a little rearranging and shelved nearly all the books that had been on the floor. I still have two big stacks of Anthony’s books which should go into his room, but I think I’ll scan those in first, so I can also track his collection.

I think that I can reasonably enter one shelf at a time and have this goal completed in the forseeable future.

The first thing I need to do... 2 years ago

is cut way back on the acquisition. Despite the purchase of 6 different bookshelves since last year (I bought 3 similar to these: Folding Shelves last year for my birthday), I still have piles on a quickly shrinking floorspace.

Right now, I have only a very basic sorting system: my BookCrossing books are contained on 4 shelving units, most of my spiritual practice books are on 2 units, my cookbooks are on one dictionary stand near the kitchen, and everything else (literature, crafts, etc.) takes up the other 6 units.

My husband has given me the go-ahead to buy the full version of Delicious Library so I can get it all on the computer and have a sort of cataloging system. Hey, if it frees up the many brain cells that are keeping track of where each book might be located, it’s well worth the investment.

I allowed my ex to force me to get rid of tons of my books. But I still have my faves! So I plan to organize my library. I want to get my titles/authors into a computer database and organize the books into sections of sort. I also want to compile a list of wanted books. I would also like to continue collecting signed copies of books. Preferably first editions.
