£125 for a French course at the University of Edinburgh. Good grief.

I have some books at home but they’ve not been very helpful. I need to hear someone speak it and be able to converse with them.

I’ve always had a knack for languages. Having grown up speaking Portuguese I can pick up on the Latin-based languages especially. I can get by with the French basics I’ve learned, but I would love to speak it fluently. It’s simply one of the most beautiful languages out there, and I know that’s a total cliché but it’s not without truth. The way the words melt into each other and the way the tongue curls around and laps at each one makes it such a pleasure to speak and listen to. But it is a difficult language to learn. It has rules of its own different from the other romance languages. It’s a project I keep picking up and abandoning repeatedly. I would love to learn it if only I had the patience.

I am in my third year of learning French at school this year and I have decided since I love the thrill of learning a different language, why just learn it in school, four hours a week? So I have started improving in my own time and I am really ahead of my class. It’s really fun.
Next year I’m going to France! I hope to be very good by then.

Good luck to everyone else with this goal! =)

I take French in school and I’m coming up on my third year now. I like the language a lot. Actually, I like languages in general. I think I initially took French because it’s considered romantic and girls would find it attractive. Surprisingly, my exceptional grades and excellent speaking skills haven’t done anything yet (A bit of sarcasm there.). That’s okay, I enjoy learning the language. French class moves a little slow though. I’ve got vocabulary memorized in a snap and conjugated verbs out the wazoo. The only thing left to do is fool around. Madame T. puts up with me though. One day I’ll be able to parler fluently en francais.
