Too Much Stuff 2 years ago

Every year in college I’ve put my things in a storage unit for the summer (I’ve had my own large room since I was an RA). Now that I’ve just graduated and had to move all of my things 700 miles away by renting this big moving truck, and now that I’ve decided I want to get an apartment almost 400 miles away (so another moving truck) I realize I have WAY too much stuff.

I hate this feeling that I can’t just pick up and leave because I am so burdened by my possessions. Now I have no plans on getting rid of the TV, computer, or PS2 but I do have dozens of books that really weren’t that good of a read in the first place, clothes I haven’t worn in years, games I’ll never play again…

Now the plus side is that I’ve already started going through my things. I have three LARGE bags of things to get rid of. The plan is to eventually have a yard sale in which the proceeds will go to the minimum I have to raise for the Breast Cancer 3 Day walk that I am doing. So I get to donate to charity and feel less burdened :)

Now I just need to learn to stop writing such lengthy entries!

Once you get started, you can’t stop! The real trick is to just let go…stop thinking about how much you spent on stuff, but instead think about how much energy, space, effort that useless crap eats up in your life. And the other key: unless it’s a one-of-a-kind rare and priceless thing, it’s worthless—toss it in the garbage or give it away.

Last weekend recycled 5 years of accumulated computer crap at CRC, donated a bunch of clothes to Goodwill and got rid of a bunch of old garbage. Next weekend, garage clean out and storage unit shopping!

Slowly but surely…Cleaned out a shelf in my bookcase, headed for the recyling bin: all my old computer magazines circa 1995ish…Dr. Dobb’s Journal, C/C++ Developer’s Journal, blah blah blah. Next up, my closet.
