the DVR really took care of this… only what i want to watch, and at my leisure…
i’m no longer slave to the tv…

got a dvr and it’s helped—all tv watching seems to be intentional now, no just flicking around and seeing where the dial lands…

i think it may be time just to get rid of my cable tv altogether and go with netflix or something where i at least feel like everything i’m watching has some sort of purpose, as opposed to just flipping around…

Sometimes I feel a litle disconnected from the rest of the outside world, but having music on in the background instead of the TV allows me to do other things, and then when I watch TV, it’s intentional, and I enjoy and get more out of what I watch.
It also kind of helps to move off to college and be too busy for TV!
This is not the fist time I’ve tried to do this, but is just… IMPOSSIBLE. we even have a tv in the kitchen for god’s sake!!!! I’ve tried to get my parents to take it away, but they just wont listen. Sometimes I’m so bored I even watch those tv commercials that last like an hour…. this is killing my mind, my study and pretty much everything I want to do but “don’t have the time to do it”
any advice will be appreciated.

I have no need to watch tv.
I listen to music instead.
A way to help with not watching is making it less accessable or easy to just turn the televison on and waste time.
It makes your mind inert.
There are so many commericals on the regular channels.
TV isn’t even apart of my life anymore, which makes this weird to talk about.

I quit watching TV on a regular business during the first Gulf War. I was pregnant and the news pissed me off. We moved the television from the living room into a back room, where it resides today. The TV is used more for my and my kids’ video games. Even the kids don’t have the habit.

This is one of the best things you can do to get your mind and life back. We have a TV in our house but other than the boyz watching cartoons on Saturday morning we don’t turn it on. I have not watched any TV for months now though I have hardly watched any for a couple of years.
Why? First of all it seems to me that there is so little on TV WORTH watching. Most of the programs are based at a JR high school level and almost all the humour is nothing but insults. Add that to the fact that TV looks more and more like the National Inquier everyday and you have a total waste of time.
So how do you break this wasteful habit. At first it is hard, but if you sit and think about how much time you waste just Channel surfing for something worth watching you can start to see the waste of time. Quickest way is to go cold turkey and get rid of your TV altogether. Most people can’t do this. Second best is to break the habit of turning it on when you first come in the house. Then don’t turn it on at all UNLESS you have a specific show you want to see.
Now if you do not fill the time with something else you will find youself right back in front of the box. The fact that you have an entry on this forum proves that you know there are better things in life. So what are some of the things you want to do with yours? I find that I have a lot more free time now that it is not wasted in front of the TV. I am able to do a lot more “art” on my computer and read books that go a lot farther at explanding your mind than TV does. Also the more you read the more you see how TV and the movies pretty much dumb things down.
So think of what it is thatyou really want to do and get out and do that. Join clubs or groups outside the house with people of like interest. Get out and see the world if only your own backyard. Life holds so much fascination if we will just step out into it.
PULL THE PLUG and start living!

i’ had internet 5 or 6 years ago for the first time,
since that day, i started to choose where to click, what to read, who his behind the information you’re reading ?
i do not see anymore TV since that time.
i like to rent a very good DVD or some old classic french movie, but in those case, it’s always me who choose to see or not, internet is the only way to know what is going in the world. stop watching CNN and fox News to start, then see only good documentary and real stuff, about the real life.
you will see, the TV is the ever stupid box our society have made to put everybody starved in front of one screen, for nothing in most case..
click somewhere elese, at least you’re the one clicking…
