I got bumped to first class when my flight was cancelled. The guy in front of me in line was irate and belligerent to the desk agent, and I was pleasant to her. I think this helped, so she placed me in first-class to make up for my inconvenience. It was nice, but i cannot imagine paying for it. Pretty exorbitant!
How to fly first class on an airplane
How I did it: I got bumped to first class when my flight was cancelled. The guy in front of me in line was irate and belligerent to the desk agent, and I was pleasant to her. I think this helped, so she placed me in first-class to make up for my inconvenience. It was nice, but i cannot imagine paying for it. Pretty exorbitant!

but so totally worth it! i was actually lucky enough to get an upgrade using frequent flyer points so i didn’t technically have to pay for it but i enjoyed every single second of that 22hr flight – plus i slept for about 8 hrs which is unheard of for me! woohoo! hoping to do the same again this december!
I think it’s an experience everyone should have once in their life even if it’s on a short flight!
When I was bumped from a flight due to weather delays, I politely expressed the inconvenience it was causing me (due to work responsibilities) and requested either ticket vouchers or first class. Since I was polite and they had openings, they moved me up. It doesn’t hurt to ask! :-)
it’s not worth it, unfortunately. Remember the Seinfeld episode where Jerry grabs the last first class upgrade, leaving Elaine in the coach from hell? Well first class really used to be that way, but it’s not so great anymore. Airlines have had to cut services big time, especially since 9/11.
OTOH if you fly international you will still get a true first class experience. But expect to pay.
I’ve been fortunate enough to fly first class a couple of times over the years. You get leather seats, more space, better service, free snacks and stuff… the list goes on. It’s pretty cool but only if you really have the money to afford it or if you’ve got a really long flight. For standard, run of the mill travel, save your money and stay at a nice hotel or go to a five-star restaurant. Seriously!

Unless I win the lottery or a contest that gives us two tickets for free.
Internationatal flights, they are a godsend. If you’ve got the extra bucks, go for it. No reason not to. Otherwise, if you’re po like me, I usually ride in steerage and save the money or miles for another trip.
