The first rain — 11 months ago
Worth doing!
I’ve been sick and was under strict orders to stay in bed today, but when the rain started I couldn’t resist. It has been over or close to 95% since the end of July often reaching the low 100’s, and this has been the first rain in over 7 weeks.
It was still very warm outside, must have been in the high 80’s so the weather was perfect for a nice stroll. After making sure my husband really had left the house, I ran to change into a t-shirt and some jogging shorts.
No shoes would be required or wanted for this trip.
It’s no fun jumping in puddles with shoes.
I headed out the door , across the ally, and into the trees.
It was a gentle rain at first, but the air was alive with the excitement of the first rain of the season. The thunder was whispering in the background, and then answering from the other side of the sky as if to say it was eager to come out and play.
I walk through the field, kicking the tall field grass and wild flowers, and watching the wild bunnies hop away to find new and more protected hiding places.
As the thunder started raising her voice, I stopped to watch the lightning brighten up the sky. The rain was still gentle at this point, although the raindrops had doubled in size and the warmth of the air around me made it feel as though I was in an expensive shower in a luxury hotel. I lifted my face, closed my eyes, spread my arms and welcomed the down poor.
On the way home I took a detour through the school yard, Who can resist swinging in the rain…. not me.
Of coarse you always expect lots of puddles in a school yard. They put them there on purpose so they can tell the kids not to jump in them. This being the most offensive rule ever made, had to be broken…so I broke it. And if anyone ever asks, you can tell them that the puddles with the mud at the bottom are the most fun. There was no use trying to stay dry myself at this point, as I was already a walking puddle
All good things must come to an end, and I knew it was time to start for home. I got to the forest that was at the entrance to the field across from our house, I remembered this goal that I had put up at the beginning of the summer. The tree were thick at this point and ever as I could hear that the rain was coming down hard,it was not getting to me, so I headed for the center of the field, laid down and closed my eyes.
And the it happened, my favorite part of the storm. The clouds gave way and plastered the earth. The sky got dark and the lightening fought back with her fire show. The thunder screamed for attention at the to of her lungs. The Earth was alive. I smiled and took it all in.
Hearing our dog bark in the background, I wondered if my husband had made it home before I had. Knowing he would expect me to still be in bed, I jumped up and nearly ran the rest of the way home. He wasn’t there …I was safe, and my little adventure is still a secret.
If you wont tell
