I had to buy the right tools, but it’s worth the cost, because it will save you in the long term. The margin on most jiffy lube type places is between 45% to 85% depending on the volume and the type of oil. Most of these places buy Bulk oil (in the drum) and the tools are a one time cost. Labor is expensive, but if you have the time to do it yourself it’s worth the small expense for the tools.
How to change my own oil
How I did it: I bought the Chilton manual for my car, went to Kragen Auto parts and later Sears, put on a mechanic's suit I had from an old Halloween, and did it! It required all of my steely resolve and foxy-cunning.
Lessons & tips: Buy the Chilton manual for your car. It tells you how to change your oil in clear, easy to understand language. Plus, it will tell you how to avoid injuring yourself or ruining your car, which can come in handy.
Resources: You'll need a mirror, so you can look in it every morning thereafter and see what a true bad-ass looks like.
