build an eco house

I work for an organisation that is campaigning on climate change, but its only just started to sink in that Im part of the problem and have to make a decision about what to do about it.

Im reading loads of information at the moment about stuff like this but I have not much money, and land with planning permission in the UK is a fortune. My family live in worcestershire and I dont want to be too far from them cos all the travelling will just create more CO2!
