    Lent  — 2 years ago

They tell me to do this for lent.
40 days, 40 nights of pumping iron.

    Frankly, the feeling’s fuckin’ fantastic.
I’m tripping like Jesus in the desert when he fasted,
Like it’s the night before we all get drafted?
Like we’re rowing through some rapids with Kevin Bacon white water rafting?
Like you’re in Epcot Center on acid?
    Exactly.

    I'm a little baffled.  — 2 years ago

I’ve received 3 three cheers on this, apparently all from the ladies. I had long thought that women were deeply uniterested in the male pursuit of lifting heavy things. Live and learn?

Time is...  — 2 years ago

Well, since the school year started yesterday, I should start working out. I know I will say “I am too busy.” And I may even believe it, but I probably am not too busy. Since about 27 I have been gaining weight (previously I was really too thin). I just need to focus on how much better I feel when I lift.
Plus, it will be hard to hunt a boar with a spear if I am weak.

I'm not sure these are realistic goals.  — 3 years ago

I kept staring at that weird phrase “be stronger.” Really, it meant “when school starts, lift three or four times a week.” What I had written was too vague. Hence, I came up with some goals. I’m not too knowledgable about lifting. I’m not a body-builder, but after 28 I could finally gain weight. Yeah, yeah, I know a million people want to “lose some weight” around here. I don’t. I like big people. Big, burly, hairy men and statuesque women. I admire strength, especially in the “circus strongman” variety. I know I’ve benched about 185 before, so perhaps I can pull it off. Here’s a secret folks—before I learned the tricks of self-hypnosis, I would try to bully weights with force. After hypnosis, I perceived the power of finesse and will. My max went from 145 to 185 in about three days. Really, you’re stronger than you think.

Be stronger. Physically, that is.  — 3 years ago

I feel better when I lift, but I tend to think I am too busy to do it. I should start doing it before I come home from work every night. It’s easy enough for me to incorporate yoga or other class activities because there is a schedule, but I have been pretty lax about setting my own fitness goals. Part of my desire to lift regularly is a desire to look better, but another part is simply the desire to be stronger. I think I would trade strength for bulk. For the next year, I will still have free gym access, so I should probably start working on this. It would also be nice if I had a buddy with whom to set a schedule.
