pick blackberries

and am loving it! (and my hubby does, too, since I use them to make his favorite dessert – blackberry cobbler) There are a few patches at my Mom’s house and a few in the fields around my house. There’s even a small one in my backyard, which I found a few days ago. This evening, my husband told me of another near a large brush pile near our house. I picked until I had blackberry juice on my hands, thorns in my fingers, and mosquito bites pretty much everywhere. I was starting to pick leaves rather than blackberries, so I thought it might be time to go back in the house (it was getting too dark). I am hoping to pick some in the morning across the road from my Mom’s house ~ they’re huge and juicy and there’s pretty much a million of them just growing on the side of the road near the city water tower.

Now to transform this image into jam, muffins and frozen berries. It’s only just started….

AND there are soooo many blackberries on these bushes, I will be picking them for weeks!

... today’s task – to pick as many blackberries as I possibly can, and hopefully by the end of the day, be making some beautiful jam!

I have to say that I did something today that I did not enjoy. We went over armed with a container and my bare hands and I went to war with the thorny blackberry bush plundering all the ripe berries I could find. The bush didn’t give up the berries without a fight, and scratched me so much that I couldn’t tell if it was the berries or blood on my fingers.

The only positive thing out of this was that my Grandma cooked up some really good blackberry cobler. But that still doesn’t make this experience worth doing!

This is my last chance to pick blackberries this season. We have just received a call letting us know that the contractor that we had hired to clean out our dam is coming in tomorrow. This is a good thing – but unfortunately I will lose my blackberry bushes for this year. So off I rush and pick everything in sight!!!!

picking blackberries and strawberries. I even found some ripe apples on one of our trees. Don’t know how many will go into the freezer or jams for that matter. Very yummy…...
