I became a mid-life horse owner. After a bad fall from my first horse during a trail ride, I became terrified of my horse, but determined to overcome it and fulfill my dream. I researched for months, observed and asked questions, then I found Parelli Natural Horse-Man-Ship. It saved my life. Through PNH, I overcame my fears, learned about horse behavior and communication, and found a program that went way beyond riding into personal development. It took ME seven years to go from being too afraid to lead him to the pasture alone to being able to canter him bareback with complete confidence. I achieved that goal a couple of months ago. Thank you, Pat and Linda, and thank you to my horse for being so patient while I “Got Here”.

I’ve taken riding lessons but never done this. I would like to ride a horse bareback along a wild beach…
I was riding my cousin’s horse and as we were done and removing the saddle, I just happened to wonder what it would be like to ride bareback. So I just literally jumped up on her back and rode. No reins, either! (Very good horse, huh?) WOW! This is probably one of the MOST fun things I’ve ever done! I think it was even easier than a saddle, in some ways. I’m gonna do this every day if I can!
Elusive Sleuth life is awesome :)
a lot more amazing than with a saddle. if you’re beginning it can be easier to get your balance with a saddle and with a saddle and stirrups you definitly have more stability. Bareback riding can be a lot more fun but only if your horse is settled and relaxed. if your horse is worked up it can be hard to balance. trotting is more difficult but cantering is fun bareback.
I might have done this before. But who cares; if I have I want to do it again. If I haven’t done it….then I want to do it. Pretty simple really.
It takes some patience to get your seat bareback, and it helps to have a gentle and smooth horse. It’s worth it though because once you can ride bareback you can ride well and be centered. Plus, you feel so much more. Every step, every breath, the body heat. I learned to ride bareback and I think it made me a better rider.
I love the feel of riding a horse bareback…smooth, sleek coat under your legs…sunwarmed hair…the rhythm of the movement.
Just don’t get overconfident. I did, and I tried to trot, and I fell off.

I suppose I should learn to ride a horse first… or would it be better to learn bareback and then learn to ride with a saddle?
I’ve ridden a horse with nothing but my pants between me and the smelly beast. Horses sweat a LOT! It was pretty nasty.
I love riding bareback! You’re so much more connected with the horse, you can feel it’s muscles under you and you can feel every little bit of it’s body moving. It’s such an awesome feeling to have all that power! And it’s wonderful in winter because the horse is so warm – you never want to get off!
That, and it also looks pretty impressive. :)
