How I did it: Actually, I did it the other way around: I went to live in Italy and learned Italian there. I went to Italy on a study abroad program. Classes were in English, but I made friends with my neighbors, a bunch of Italian students. They were very beautiful and very kind and they taught me Italian and how to cook risotto and a few other things. The moral of the story is, you don't have to learn Italian first. Just find a way to stay there long enough. You'll love it.
