Wisconsin-it’s just one state over, but it is a different state! I’m sure I’ll probably try out a few others through the years too…I can’t stay put.
How I did it: Visited a few times on vacation.
Saved up enough money for a deposit and a few months of not being employed.
Louisiana: Applied to school and went to college (easier to meet people and have things to do).
Florida: Rented an apartment and just looked for work (harder to meet people, but possible).
Lessons & tips: Do some research about the new state: the weather, cost of living, quality and availability of schools, lure of natural attractions (mountains, beach, etc), family/friends and possibility for employment.
Visit a few times before moving to make sure it is somewhere you really would like to live.
Get a PO Box in the new state to use as an address on your resume (a local address looks better). A PO Box is also helpful since you might move a few times withing the first year or so of living in a new state.
Resources: Craigslist.com, online newspapers, friends of friends

I’ve learned so much, and although it was difficult to move far from a place I love, it’s worth the experience. Personally, I’ve been allowed a chance to delve into a lifestyle previously unbeknownst to me.

...It’s been nine months living in Pennsylvania now. Wow, life is so different than it was before I moved. I feel like nothing about my day-to-day existence really resembles what it was before this move. I’m still the same person, but I’ve grown so much and morphed into such a more complete picture of myself. I am so happy for the change that has come from all of this.
I definitely believe that undertaking a huge life-change such as this one is a worthwhile experience for anyone to have!

I am very much considering California right now. No, not because that’s what every kid does, but for school. If I live there for one year, I’m a legal resident. Legal residents attend school for next to nothing!!...actually nothing if you’re in the low income bracket (which I guarantee I will be). I think I might do a bit of research first and see if any other states offer great deals like this.
If anyone knows of any, I’d realy appreciate it!

I’m planning to move to Pennsylvania in only about 3 weeks! It’s terrifically exciting for me. I think I’ll be able to mark this goal as “completed” after living there for a year (should be easy, considering I have to sign a year-long lease for my apartment).
