After many months of almost-daily meditation, I started to feel a shift, about a month ago. I had despaired of ever quieting the insane chatter in my brain, but had kept at it anyway. Then I started to be able to feel the pause at the end of the breath, something Pema Chodron talks about. Knowing I could come back to that pause made it much easier for me to be gentle with myself and turn down the critical voice while sitting. Some days/weeks are easier than others, but I realize that it’s the difficult days when you are really growing the muscles you need to deal with life.
