Go to La Tomatina

This goal is far down on my list for a reason… I didn’t think I’d get to it soon. But since someone just cheered it, thereby reminding me of its existence, I looked up the dates.

HEY! Perfect! It just so happens that in September 2009 I promised to dedicate all my efforts to reaching the Basque region for a friend’s wedding. Since I’m planning to be in the neighborhood, I also invited a few friends I met studying in Ireland in 2001 to have a little reunion in Barcelona that month—whom are scattered around the globe.

So La Tomatina – I’ve just Wiki’d – would fit in perfectly!

And I’ve never been to the southern coast of Spain or Portugal.

So I’m gonna throw something out there to the universe… Maybe a publisher would bite on an offer to write about a Spain/Portugal tour (with a clever hook I’ve yet to work out), thereby funding my ability to do all the above.

Why wouldn’t you want to throw a whole whack of tomatoes at strangers and loved ones?

La Tomatina was an experience like no other though you needed to be either very drunk or clinically insane to attend. After having my t-shirt ripped to shreds by some burly Spaniards, we spent the next 90 minutes get soaked by the locals and pelting tomatoes at each other. But it was easily one of the best laughs I’ve had for a long time and I only wish I could have stayed for the post-food fight drinkathon.
