    Faust I & II have got to be two of the worst books ever written in German (along with “Effie Briest,” by Fontane)... The whole concept of “you can be a jerk your entire life but as long as you repent in the moments before death you will be forgiven and enter Heaven” just repulses me. Pathetic. Oh, and Goethe’s stilted writing is painful to read.
