Lani is hoping for the best.
It’s really just House of Leaves, but I can see why such a nearly unbearable book would deserve the article usage. I read this a couple of years ago, upon recommendation over Christmas break and I don’t remember starting or finishing, really, but I remember the constant reading, the way I couldn’t possibly eat or sleep until I’d finished it. It absolutely sucked me in immediately. While I do use the sideways words and music staffs and hidden codes to entice other readers into MZD’s coolness, I’ve found that each time I open the book again, those things are always secondary to the way the plot actually unfolds and the almost frightening depth of the characters. Symptomatic, I’d say, rather than diagnostic. It’s definitely worth a read, if you’re willing to devote insane amounts of time trying to get inside.

I give up with this goal. The House is here, I know it’s waiting for me. Some day, when I feel it.

I definately liked the bit about the house better than the other bits about the crazy boy narrator though. Wonder if they’ll make it into a horror flick?

I really dug this book. At first, I felt the sideways printing was just a gimick, but it really made sense for the plot and the theme… I felt I was being drawn inside the book, as he was being drawn into the house. On the whole, it was a truly elegant construction.

While i’m not reading the House of Leaves, i’ve read a couple of ok books (Bridget Jones diairy and some Ruth Rendell), a pretty good one, The subtle Knife by Pullman, and an amazing and blowing-mind one, Quarantine by Egan. And i’m reading the totally brilliant Ilium by Simmons. Gosh, this Simmons, what a man.

Gosh, this book is heavy. I mean, really. Maybe 2 kgs. Maybe more. And i’m too tired now to put me in wholly. Let’s take also some Gaiman, Hornby, and Fielding for my blessed vacation !
