I got my SSI Open Water Diver’s Certificate on the Great Barrier Reef, off Cairns…
It was one of the sweetest experiences of my life – it really was like visiting another planet.
There were SO many fish, everywhere, all kinds and colours, all around us. We were also lucky enough to see sharks, dolphins, and green turtles.
We were able to feed the fish too, which meant they were close enough to touch…we also got the chance to give one of the turtles a scratch on the back. We cuddled a pineapple sea cucumber (omg that was so strange) and touched giant clams, a black sea cucumber, and stayed WELL clear of the 3 cone shells we found (covered in a very deadly neurotoxin, and they also shoot darts that will paralyse you too).
I would reccommend it to anyone who has the chance to do this. I can’t wait to go again one day.
It took me 3 months to prepare for the trip over there, and we spend 2 days diving out on the reef. I only wish we’d had a whole week out there.

Live Aboard
I did four days aboard a boat, and did 11 dives. This is really the best way to see the reef. The first day I was terribly sea sick, but fortunately, I got my “sea legs” and was able to enjoy the trip. The live aboard trips are able to go out to the far edges of the reef, and you’ll get plenty of dives in. There were 17 guests and six crew on my boat, and it was a really great experience. E & I will be going back in January for a five day trip.

so I guess this would be the best place to get myself scuba certified and see what Down Under has to offer deep down…
The only problem is that I might not want to come back up!

Personally (I will get a lot of sh*t for this but that doesn’t matter), I have seen nicer places to dive. For starters, the Maldives. They are just absolute heaven. The GBR is a simplistic swimming pool compared to what the Maldives has to offer.
Otherwise, although I can’t speak from experience with this one, I hear that the Red Sea has a lot more diversity than the GBR.
Either way, the GBR is definitely amazing. But if you were planning a trip just to go diving somewhere, I would definitely recommend goin to the Maldives instead.
