Rules and regs don’t apply when the bullets fly. You watch out for your team, your squad, your platoon, no one or nothing else matters at that moment in time more than keeping them, and you, alive. Not your cheating wife, your dead uncle, nothing. Watch your lanes and don’t fall into Army regs (i.e. battle drills that don’t work) and use common sense when common sense is due!
We got back to the U.S. Monday morning, and I got home late last night.
My entire unit survived with broken fingers and emotional trauma the worst of our injuries. My prayers are with the loved ones of those who were not so fortunate.
We made it from the International Zone to BIAP (Baghdad International Airport), then flew yesterday from BIAP to Kuwait, where we are now waiting for our flight back to the good old U.S. of A.!
All arms and legs present and accounted for.
Never forget those who weren’t so lucky.
I’m not crossing days off a calendar yet, and I won’t really have a warm fuzzy about our departure date until our replacements get here, but I’m getting closer.
We’re leaving in two or three months after arriving here two days before Christmas 2004.
