So much progress! 4 months ago

My cousin in Wales sat down with my 98 year old grandad for me, and managed to piece together a couple more branches on the family tree. I’m so excited to look these people up! Its all coming together nicely, at least on dad’s side. Mum’s side is a bit of a mystery, with records lost in deepest darkest Spain…

    To be continued.

Sheppard, Morgan, Taylor 4 months ago

These are the families I come from. On my father’s side anyway. Plus more I’m still trying to find.

It’s strange finding out the names of your great-great aunts and uncles. And I think it’s a real shame women give up their names when they marry, and that English census questions don’t ask about maiden names. I’ve hit quite a few walls because of that!

I have been talking to the relatives that are still living, as PurpleHeather suggested, and have discovered I’ve a great-aunt Elsie who’s still alive at 103.

Some really cute names back in the tree too – Minnie, Beatrice, Eliza-Victoria, Martha and Edwin (who built coaches). Mostly the men were carpenters or beer merchants.

And there’s a strong line of English blood which everyone in my family would hate to admit!! The Taylor side seem to have come from Devon, back in the 1800s. The Morgan side are about as Welsh as it gets though, and so seem the Sheppards.

It’s a fun journey so far!

Progress has been made...only 5 maiden names and 2 full names to go 4 months ago

Now I have found all 16 great great grandparents my next step is to find all 32 great great great grandparents.
In some lines of the family tree I have gone back much further than others and this goal reminds me to spend time on other areas that are still mysterious.

I have now got 25 full names, 5 women with only first names, 1 man with only a surname and only 1 total unknown remaining.

    That means I have:
10 full sets of 3x great grandparents
5 sets of 3x great grandparents where I’m only missing the woman’s maiden name and
1 set where I only know the male surname and have no spouse details

    Thomas Wotton m. Jane unknown

    William Mortimore m. Mary Goodyear

    James Potter m. Jennifer Trevaskis

    William Treloar m. Maria unknown

William Henry Windmill m. Lavinia Gates

Photos and a painting - I can see the faces of 3 of my 3x great grandmothers 8 months ago

I have a couple of photos of Ann Rhodes. One is a studio shot from about 1870 (shown) and another is of her and her family outside the family butchers shop possibly 10 years earlier – unsurprisingly this photo needs restoration.

Another photo I have is of either Lavinia Gates or Elizabeth Ann Hollands with Lavinia’s son and his wife who is Elizabeth’s daughter and their children. Unless there are other photos out there with names on I’ll never know which of the two 3x great grandmother this is.

My parents have a painting of Hannah Hirst. She doesn’t look too happy and it looks like the artist has put her in clothes and lace hair accessory/cap that really doesn’t suit her.

So far I have got... 8 months ago

22 full names, 4 women with only first names, 2 men with only surnames and 4 total unknowns.

    That means I have:
9 full sets of 3x great grandparents
4 sets of 3x great grandparents where I’m only missing the woman’s maiden name
2 sets where I only know the male surname and have no spouse details
    and
1 set where I haven’t a clue as I don’t yet know who my 2x great grandmother was there

    Thomas Wotton m. Jane unknown

    William Mortimore m. Mary Goodyear

    James Potter m. Jennifer Trevaskis

    William Treloar m. Maria unknown

William Henry Windmill m. Lavinia Gates

Daniel Hawes m. Elizabeth Ann Hollands

Robert Laver m. Frances Emma Parker

    William Revening m. Maria unknown

    George Buttle m. Ann Rhodes

    unknown Clayton m. unknown unknown

William Brook Bentley m. Hannah Hirst

    Mark Midgley m. Margaret unknown

    unknown Allison m. unknown unknown

    unknown unknown m. unknown unknown

    William Abel m. Elizabeth Norton

    Thomas Thompson m. Mary Carter

William Abel and Elizabeth Norton are the parents of George Abel who married my 2x great grandmother but this was shortly after she was born and she never lived with them, however, the Abel children considered themselves to be siblings from some documents we have (birth certificate showing her maiden name as Abel when the informant was an Abel child). I’m never going to be certain whether these two are my ancestors or not but it’s looking likely.
