"Got off my duff and started a webcomic with a solid story behind it."
How I did it: I'd been wanting to start a webcomic for a few years, but the gag-a-day strips didn't quite work out for me. I was finally inspired by an idea for a story that I really felt good about putting in webcomic format. It took me until I'd worked out the plot beginning to end (with a few gaps in the middle to be filled at a later date, I'll admit) before I was actually able to start.
Lessons & tips: Read, read, READ! There's a wealth of information on webcomics and there are many different facets to the medium you should know about. Especially that little thing where you have to, y'know, run a website. Read the tutorials, do the research, and have a plan before you start. And don't be afraid to take a break or cut back if the updates get too difficult to juggle! If you get too overwhelmed, you're more likely to just end up quitting and that's never fun.
Resources: ComicGenesis is not only a great free host to start out with, but the forum community can also provide a lot of help for the beginning (or otherwise) webcomicker, whether you're hosted on CG or not. Also, a lot of webcomickers will have links to good resources on their links page. Even if they don't, they're always the best people to ask for help--IF they're open to it. Remember to check on that since some just don't have the time. They'll likely address the matter in their FAQ section or elsewhere on their site.
