I’ve taught piano for many years, ever since I was about 19 and in college. I taught for eight years in a music studio. Presently, I have only six students, but I am enjoying it very much.
How I did it: Had one "trial" lesson....then I sold my house and moved. Between the moving and my full time job demands, it made this goal unreasonable for me in the near future. The student's parents and I mutually agreed that our schedules were not working, and I suggested they find someone who might be more flexible. If I am to do this at all, I need to do this with clarinet instead of piano, as I think I am more comfortable with that instrument and it would be less stressful. I did not feel joy in having a piano student, unfortunately, even though he was a great kid.
Lessons & tips: Be willing to give it a shot. Teaching piano is not for everyone who knows how to play. Be realistic about the impact it will have on your personal and family life, as it is a time commitment and can be a family sacrifice as well.

They showed up! I made the first lesson “free” as it was more of an introductory and exploratory lesson. I think I can make a difference in the way this child is learning, reversing some bad habits and building on natural talent. I am a bit more at ease with this, but it will still be a lot of work as I develop my initial style and curriculum!! Can’t believe I am doing this!

as of tomorrow I will officially give teaching piano a shot….have 2 students lined up, one being my own son! Going rates anyone???
Flycello is having a wonderful year!
I submitted my cover letter and resume to a music school in the area where I’d like to live, so now I’m waiting to see if they need/want any piano teachers. I’m nervous about it, I know I could start my own studio (again, argh) but I really love teaching in a school setting. Being around other teachers keeps me really motivated.
I should at least get out the keyboard and start playing again. Where to set it up?

I am teaching my son, and while I have had some offers to teach, no serious candidates have stepped forward, and I am quite relieved. I think right now teaching would be too much stress on me and the family in general…but if I later get one student, I might change my mind. Not actively pursuing this one any more, however.

Which may be a good thing…I am rethinking this goal in light of my own energy level and schedule. On the one hand it could earn a lot of extra easy income that could be used to pay off the remaining debt faster…on the other hand, my current job is VERY intense and demanding (in a good way) and I wonder if it would be good for my stress level.
I’m going to take this as it comes, but I may not pursue this as heavily as I considered. There is the possibility of a flood of students which I am not prepared to deal with.
I did purchase James W. Bastien’s book “How to Teach Piano Successfully.” I was taught myself partially with the Bastien method, and figured it would at the very least help me in teaching my son.

And called one of the families interested in piano lessons. We’ll see if they are still interested, and second if my schedule can actually accommodate this goal!

Ok..this goal is starting to scare me…I just had an official request to teach piano to a kid tonight…from a different individual than the ones mentioned below, and am set to start in 2 to 3 weeks.
I don’t even have a clue as to the going rate, and they have never heard me actually play, so I am a little scared. If I could do a good job I could probably round up a lot of students. I am scared, however, as this is really a side job at this point and I already have a full time job. It would be great to use the income to pay off debt.
This inquiry was just too strange and can be only explained as divine intervention, as it was completely out of the blue. I think maybe I am meant to do this…but I gotta get my act together!! Lesson plans! Individual student needs! Teacher capability! Clean house and place for parents to wait during lessons! Yikes!
