Holly27. Fatuma, Kenya

I like lots of things about her story, but I particularly like her pink scarf. Is that a selfish reason to chose her to lend money too?

Fatuma’s story

Fatuma is a devoted mother with the desire and the urge to move forward. She always strives to reach success since she knows that it is through hard work that she will reach it. Fatuma is grateful for the support she received and that she is receiving now. Since the previous loan, her living standards have greatly improved. Her goal is to have a prosperous life and see that her children become professionals. She says that she was able to open a retail shop recently, which she plans to expand. It is for this reason that she is requesting this loan to add to her stock of maize flour, wheat flour, sodas, snacks, among other instant goods.

You can lend too at http://www.kiva.org/lend/508878

HollyNilson in Peru

Nilson is 35 years old and married to Rosita, with whom he has six children. This family lives in a simple little house located in the community of Chanchamayo.

He has been in agriculture ever since he was 17 years old, enough time that he is now experienced and has knowledge to work in the countryside. He has six parcels of land where he cultivates coffee, avocados, cacao, and plantains. He has just finished his coffee harvest with the final “scraping” which consists of finding and picking the last coffee beans off of the bushes, so now he needs bags of fertilizer to start a new planting. Meanwhile he’s also working on growing his plantains and avocados. When all of his lands are seen to, he works as a day laborer on other people’s plots of land. This gives him a steady stream of income for his family, as he also catches fish in the river and sells whatever he finds in the market. Nilson is a very hard wroker. These days he wants to start with the cleaning of his coffee plantation and for this he needs bags of fertilizer.

This is his third loan with MFP, and he is very thankful for the opportunity and the confidence that has been placed in him. He does not intend to fail, and he plans to make his payments on time. He is also an active and responsible member of his community banking group, “Sol Naciente” (the Rising Sun).

With the money that he is now asking for, he will be able to buy 15 bags of fertilizer, which cost 120 Soles apiece. The rest will be used to pay the laborers he will hire to do the cleaning and preparation of his fields.

Holly15. Chuun from Cambodia

Chhun is 40 years old and a responsible mother of three single children, living in Kompong Cham province, where she and her husband operate a type of business as local rice cultivators. She has been engaged in the business for over 10 years. She usually plants her rice crops twice a year to produce enough food from her land.

With the requested amount, she’ll pay for the construction laborers repairing her house. And with the balance of the funds, she will buy a breeding pig for offspring, and rice seeds, fertilizers and pesticides to keep her crops in good condition.

COMMENT:
I like this loan, if I want a loan to go to the bank to get my house fixed, I can do that. But I don’t think Chuun has the ability. I also like the idea of her getting a pig. 16 months ago

Holly14. Leonid from the Ukraine

Leonid and his family live in Vodyanoye. He grows early vegetables, radishes, cucumbers, and tomatoes in greenhouses. Leonid has a large piece of land, three large greenhouses (60×9 meters) and two separate greenhouses for seedlings. He has been farming for eight years. There are 100,000 hryven (UAH) invested in his farm. Every year the cost of seed and greenhouse film comes to 36,000 hryven.

Leonid needs a loan through Kiva of 10,000 hryven to buy 4,000 hryven worth of greenhouse film, 5,000 hryven worth of seed, and 1,000 hryven worth of fertilizer. The borrowed funds will help Leonid to cover and tighten the film on his greenhouses, while it still isn’t very cold, so he can begin to sow seed. Leonid will invest the profit he earns in improving the living conditions in his home. Not long ago, they finished a good renovation of their house and were able to install a bath and toilet. This autumn, Leonid is planning to install good heating in the house which is why he will need to have the additional income.

HollyLoan 11

I’ve made 12 loans on KIVA so far, I donate with the 43Things team. I started out with the goal of making 10 loans, and once that was done, I’ve decided to be a bit more ambitious. It’s fun keeping track of where I’ve made loans and who I’ve made them to. Here’s my most recent loan.

“John is a hardworking young man, married with two children living in Fort Portal, Uganda. He owns a carpentry workshop that he has been operating for the last six years and faces the challenges of price fluctuations and inflation. In spite of this, John has a dream of expanding his business into new markets and have a more permanent location.

Targeting the Christmas season, he needs the loan to buy wood, mattresses and covers to use to make furniture to sell.
