-Cleared out the closet and Mr. D cleaned out his closet. As a reward I bought a new dress for work. Trying to stay focused on only purchasing needs and less wants.
-Also cleared out books we have read and don’t read repeatedly. Also, staying focused on only getting books from the library. I read too much to purchase too often…
-Doing well on getting rid of papers and notepads so far!! 1 week ago

kmom2468So now I'm hoarding groceries?

I wanted to build up my pantry to tide us over 30 days in the event of a minor disaster. I’m there. I need a little more water, but essentially, I’m there. I can stop buying “extra” groceries, now. This spending addiction is a tough one to not let creep into every aspect of my life. Simple grocery shopping – who knew! 4 weeks ago

teachocolateandbooksskincare

I’m intent on improving my skin (I set up a goal for it), so I want to list everything I have that I can use for my face and body, so that I can see just how much I really have dotted around my home, office, and bags. Cosmetics and toiletries are typically small investments, but a little goes a long way so the frequency with which I’ve been purchasing them is way off. (Bolded products are half-full or less)

Face care:
Curel foam cleanser, Curel hydrating lotion, Curel intense moisturizing cream
Burt’s bees Orange Cleanser
Derma E psorzema cream, Derma E teatree cream
Now Foods hyaluronic acid serum
Perfect gel cleanser
Heritage Colloidal Silver foam cleanser, Heritage castor oil
Queen Helene cocoa butter facial scrub
Organic jojoba oil
Rose gel moisturizer

Hands:
Rimmel cuticle oil
Nail and fingertips peel-off pack mask
Burt’s bees lemon cuticle creme, Burt’s bees hand salveCanmake litchee hand cream

Body:
Lush massage bars: Snow Fairy, Each Peach, Shimmy Shimmy, Therapy
Lush bar soaps: x 4
Lush body powder
Lush shower gels: Snow fairy, Ponche, Rose Jam
Nubian Heritage mango butter body lotion, Nubian H black soap shower gel, Nubian H black soap bar
Grace Cole coconut and lime body lotion
Burt’s Bees vitamin E and lemon body oil, B’s Bees cacao body butter
Gremel body lotion
Body Shop satsuma lotion sample
Organic shea butter, acai butter, cocoa butter
Homemade body butter blend (vanilla, shea, cocoa, jojoba)
Teatree oil, jojoba, castor oil cleansing blend

I’ve got exfoliating gloves and a brush for the shower. I do want to get another brush to keep out of the shower, but I feel like it’s not really justified until I’m more rigorous about using these products…

Strangely soothing to write out that list! And an excellent reminder to stay away from the toiletries aisle. 1 month ago

SimplicityInTheLBCslowly but surely

We’ve made our way through another small tube of toothpaste, a bottle of antibac hand soap, and I’m almost done with a sampler of perfume that is nice but not really my style.

Also managed to eat most of the food in the fridge last week before any of it went bad – we found uses for the buttermilk, the zucchini, some aging lemons, and a pork loin. This one is a challenge for us, since I make these grand meal plans and then we don’t actually follow them, which results in a fridge full of fresh (and expensive) food that then goes to waste :( 1 month ago

teachocolateandbooksWipes!

I’m not a wipe person, but for reasons unknown they’ll seem like a good idea once a year or so. I had a packet of 50 deodorant wipes at the office that I never used, so they came home and languished further. Ditto a packet of cleansing wipes and wet wipes for when there’s no washlet.

I put them all next to my bed for evenings when I’m not well or too tired to shower, and they’ve been great. It’s so nice to freshen up before sleep, or in the morning if I showered the night before.

I’m glad I’m using and enjoying them before they dry up. 1 month ago

2/14/14 I finally took the time to count up the amount of yarn I have and it turns out I’ve used a lot more than I thought I had. I’ve used 99 more skeins since I last made a full count.

2/12/14 I’ve been working on using up yarn. As always whenever I see a bit of space in my yarn shelves, I thwart my plans or I’m given yarn. This time it was my mother. She decided that at 86 she no longer wanted to crochet. In the past she has given up crocheting yarn and now she is finished with doilies. I don’t crochet doilies and I will use the thread she gave me yesterday in the homespun style blankets I make for Hospice. 19 balls of crochet thread!

I’ve been using up yarn to make a poncho and it is looking pretty good. I failed to keep track of how many skeins I’ve used and I’ll be finished with the first part sometime this week or early next week. Then, I have the collar and the fringe. I’ve given some yarn away and I will have to make a conscientious effort to count up what I have on hand. In the meantime, I’m just adding the recently acquired.

I’ve used 7 candles, a bar of soap, and some lotion.

kmom2468Window shopping

Went shopping for a new pistol. Had fun trying them out. Found one I liked. But in the end, decided I didn’t need it. The one I have is quite serviceable. I’ve put thousands of rounds through it. It fits well. I am comfortable with it and know exactly where everything is with it. No, don’t need the new, shiny thing – the one I have works perfectly. 2 months ago

diosaPost Xmas Clear out

So this xmas we focused on asking for more things we needed than wanted which has turned out to be a great idea b/c we have really shopped quite a bit in the post-xmas sales. So I have been dedicated to replacing some of my most worn out pieces (winter coat, boots) and making sure they get out of the house.

I resisted the B and B sale and only bought 2 lotions and 2 antibac. Have recently put a bottle of lotion by the bedside and am using it nightly. Also have placed a candle on the coffee table and have started using it more often as a result.

Mr. D has joined in the fray and bought out more notepads which we are actively using. Cleaned our office and disposed of more papers/articles that are no longer needed with Uni wrapped up. Managed to fit all my paperwork into the boxes I have so more are not needed!

Tea – trying hard not to hoard my tea and drink it up. After all, its a relatively inexpensive habit. 2 months ago

teachocolateandbooksaaaall the things

I have a few goals related to home and material possessions. I feel acutely how much stress they cause me. I no longer want to waste long stretches of time trying to manage things; this is the first year that I no longer feel young and I feel the need to refocus and really think about what I’m doing with my time on this earth.

My goals for this year on the home front are:
-cut down drastically on the total amount of things in my home
-make sure everything has a designated place
-use my resources to be more organized and personally fulfilled in general (i.e., got oil paints and a guitar, will use them)

Recent empties and things put back into use:
-various groceries from the pantry I’d had for a while
-more hair products
-a bunch of stationery
-quite a few pieces of clothing that were hanging with their tags on

Things to use up:
-body lotion (7)
-body massage bars and balms (5)
-face creams, lotions, and serums (6)
-face cleansing soaps, gels, and scrubs (8)
-hand creams and balms (6)
-hair products (10)
-mascara (5)
-foundations, make-up bases, and illuminators (8)

Things to use:
-art supplies
-all clothes, shoes, accessories, and make-up
-books
-DVDS
-CDs
-games
-guitar
-sports equipment
-kitchen equipment
-language learning materials
-brain! Seriously. Getting dusty. 3 months ago

grandmonsterusing instead of tossing

I realized that there are many things which I use instead of buying new and I should post those items here. For example: Years ago one of the grandkids was making a picture with magic markers while sitting on my bed and yes, the felt tip marker left indelible ink on my sheets. I tried getting the stain out but I couldn’t. For some reason I kept the sheet around though it never graced a bed again. Now, I may be the only person in my city with 400 thread count drop cloths. Yep, I decided they had to pay rent if they were going to take up space. 3 months ago

teachocolateandbookslittle update

Empties:
- several samples
- a tube of hand cream
- a bar of Lush soap I had been hoarding because it smells too good and is a limited edition.
- three pens
- two notebooks

Kind of empties:
- been careful about food waste so I have been eating my way through my freezer and the “pantry”, which is actually two big plastic storage drawers in the tatami room.
Pasta, green beans, tempeh, various seeds, nuts, dried fruits, cereals, bread going stale revamped as crunchy garlic toast, etc. The only thing I really need to be careful of now is to not buy more than one fresh soy product at a time as they only keep a week or so and I don’t eat tofu or okara more than once a week.

Put back into use:
- These things fall in and out of favor very fast, but my hand weights and kettlebells are being used daily
- A very nice scented candle from Thann and some Mariage Freres incense
- Bobble water bottle and two SIGG bottles
- Every lip gloss, balm and chapstick I own. I’ve got 5 in my bag and another 5 dotted about the house. Ridiculous, I know.
- Burt’s Bees hand salve and a pot of Lush face cream sit on my desk at work. I’ve been going make-up free at work save for a bit of mascara so that I can moisturize my skin regularly throughout the day. I could do with some foundation coverage to be honest, but my priority is comfortable skin right now.

Soon to be used:
- Going for a crafternoon next weekend at a friend’s house so I’ll be sharing my supplies with everyone. Origami paper, glitter, wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, stickers, washi tape, it’ll be a free for all :-) 4 months ago

teachocolateandbooksEmpty

A pot of aloe body gel.

Took a bunch of cosmetics to work, it is after all where I spend most of my time…

Also took some herbal teabags that had been hanging around for a while in my cupboard. Started drinking the dandelion tea I bought a year or so ago. 5 months ago

teachocolateandbooksEmpties

Lots of products finished in the last month including things I’d had for a couple of years: hair mousses and sprays (5 in total, 2 more nearly used up), bath bombs and salts (all of them), face masks.

A couple of soap dispensers are refilled and back in use and the nabe pot has come back out and is in use.

Aside from organizing the kitchen sink cupboard, I think my evening project will be to make little “kits” of useful stuff for my bags and each room. Taking cues from grandmonster putting pens and notebooks in every room. 5 months ago

11/17/13 I’ve been doing pretty good about using yarn ~ 10 skeins this week. However, I purchased 6 skeins (yeah, I’m crazy) from Goodwill. I finished off a jigsaw puzzle. A USPS employee delivered a package to me yesterday, in the rain, and his pen wouldn’t work. I took the card into the house signed it and gave him the card and my pen, since I still have a bunch, just not hanging around cluttering up my house.

11/7/13 After etalking with Diosa, I finished formulating the plan for pens and pencils and I now have 2 pens, 2 pencils, a pair of scissors, and a nail file in every downstairs room of my house. I think I have a better chance of using them if they are readily available throughout the house.

I’ve gone way overboard. I purchased and then was given a total of 128 skeins of yarn and gave away 5 skeins immediately.

grandmonsterstill October

10/23 I gave away a skein of yarn yesterday and stopped at Goodwill on the way home, only to find 3 more skeins. I’ve been using candles whenever I meditate and sometimes just because I like them. So, I know I’ve used 2 for sure and maybe more. It really is time for a recount of them and yarn. Maybe tomorrow? That may be when I round up pens and pencils for a big purge or just a count of them.

10/26 I haven’t gathered up all the pens and pencils, but I did realize that I wanted to add another category to this list ~ jigsaw puzzles. I have a bunch my mother and others have given me. I finally pulled one out and put it together this week. Most of them have 1000 pieces and I really enjoy doing them. I give them away after their completion. I counted all the candles and I must have miscounted them somewhere along the way because I have 49 right now despite using some every morning. I’ve adjusted the count.

Revised list

diosaPaper and pens

After the household amalgamation we’ve noticed we have tons of paper, post its, and pens/highlighters. We have a little unit to store them in and apparently we have been storing them instead of using them.
So, pads of paper are coming out for grocery and to do lists. The pens are another issue though, since most of them are still working….hmmmm 6 months ago

kmom2468End of season sales for garden seeds had me tempted

So I inventoried the seeds I have, and I have plenty. I don’t need to buy more – I need to save and buy some land to sow them on!
Some items from the inventory
  • hundreds of black eye peas
  • hundreds of Kentucky Wonder pole beans
  • more than a dozen varieties of Morning Glories
  • lavender moon flower seeds
  • more than 20 types of tomato seeds, herb seeds, and flower seeds
  • carrots, corn, yellow squash, zucchini, patty pan squash, and pumpkin

Save the seeds, save $ for land! Pay of debt! 6 months ago

So the last time I was here, was August. I had very little time and now that I have more time, I don’t want to do much. I suppose that is because I did so much in July, August and September working with my mother and helping her back to recovery. I wouldn’t change the time I spent with her. kmom2468Made a yummy meal

Found enough stuff around the pantry and in the fridge to make tacos. Sure, we didn’t have lettuce and tomatoes – but I made a box of flavored rice that’s been sitting around – and with salsa and sour cream and an extra dose of cheese, turned out well. And, kept some food from going bad and being wasted. 6 months ago

teachocolateandbooksList of shame!

Things to use that I tend to neglect:

-Shoes, clothes, accessories; that sounds like I’m going around naked. Rather, I’m wearing the same small selection of items every day. I like dressing up, so there’s room to play more each day.

-Craft supplies, art materials;

-Books; so many unread!

-Toiletries and cosmetics; I fluctuate between being angelic and not buying anything, wittling away my stash, and then for unknown reasons buying things I don’t really need.

-My guitar; I love my guitar and I feel very guilty about not practicing.

-Stationery and office supplies; my weakness…

-Kitchen equipment and recipe books; I am officially at my absolute worst when it comes to the home front. I think everyone in my house would be a lot happier if I learn to cook properly.

-Bento boxes; which would mean that I’m actually packing my lunches.

-Exercise equipment; aah. Do I do anything else aside from go to the office and veg out at home? I think not.

Speaking of which, off I go! 7 months ago
