Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

I haven’t been doing this on a daily basis, but every so often I remember it when I’m about to buy something I don’t need or go out to eat when I have food at home. I think that makes it a successful resolution. 2 weeks ago

6/20/14 I’ve used 2 complete skeins of yarn on my new project.

6/19/14 my mother gave me some honey, a boxed bread mix and some other food items. I’m in the process of using the honey in the bread that I make and I’ve mixed up the bread for tonight’s supper. (edit the bread was not to my liking. Part went home with a guest and the rest went to the birds and squirrels.)

6/17/14 I used 2 very large skeins of yarn, another bar of soap, another candle and a bottle of lotion.

6/4/14 I used up another notebook.

diosaSpring Cleaning

-Cleared out the closet and Mr. D cleaned out his closet. As a reward I bought a new dress for work. Trying to stay focused on only purchasing needs and less wants.
-Also cleared out books we have read and don’t read repeatedly. Also, staying focused on only getting books from the library. I read too much to purchase too often…
-Doing well on getting rid of papers and notepads so far!! 4 months ago

kmom2468So now I'm hoarding groceries?

I wanted to build up my pantry to tide us over 30 days in the event of a minor disaster. I’m there. I need a little more water, but essentially, I’m there. I can stop buying “extra” groceries, now. This spending addiction is a tough one to not let creep into every aspect of my life. Simple grocery shopping – who knew! 5 months ago

2/14/14 I finally took the time to count up the amount of yarn I have and it turns out I’ve used a lot more than I thought I had. I’ve used 99 more skeins since I last made a full count.

2/12/14 I’ve been working on using up yarn. As always whenever I see a bit of space in my yarn shelves, I thwart my plans or I’m given yarn. This time it was my mother. She decided that at 86 she no longer wanted to crochet. In the past she has given up crocheting yarn and now she is finished with doilies. I don’t crochet doilies and I will use the thread she gave me yesterday in the homespun style blankets I make for Hospice. 19 balls of crochet thread!

I’ve been using up yarn to make a poncho and it is looking pretty good. I failed to keep track of how many skeins I’ve used and I’ll be finished with the first part sometime this week or early next week. Then, I have the collar and the fringe. I’ve given some yarn away and I will have to make a conscientious effort to count up what I have on hand. In the meantime, I’m just adding the recently acquired.

I’ve used 7 candles, a bar of soap, and some lotion.

kmom2468Window shopping

Went shopping for a new pistol. Had fun trying them out. Found one I liked. But in the end, decided I didn’t need it. The one I have is quite serviceable. I’ve put thousands of rounds through it. It fits well. I am comfortable with it and know exactly where everything is with it. No, don’t need the new, shiny thing – the one I have works perfectly. 6 months ago

diosaPost Xmas Clear out

So this xmas we focused on asking for more things we needed than wanted which has turned out to be a great idea b/c we have really shopped quite a bit in the post-xmas sales. So I have been dedicated to replacing some of my most worn out pieces (winter coat, boots) and making sure they get out of the house.

I resisted the B and B sale and only bought 2 lotions and 2 antibac. Have recently put a bottle of lotion by the bedside and am using it nightly. Also have placed a candle on the coffee table and have started using it more often as a result.

Mr. D has joined in the fray and bought out more notepads which we are actively using. Cleaned our office and disposed of more papers/articles that are no longer needed with Uni wrapped up. Managed to fit all my paperwork into the boxes I have so more are not needed!

Tea – trying hard not to hoard my tea and drink it up. After all, its a relatively inexpensive habit. 7 months ago

grandmonsterusing instead of tossing

I realized that there are many things which I use instead of buying new and I should post those items here. For example: Years ago one of the grandkids was making a picture with magic markers while sitting on my bed and yes, the felt tip marker left indelible ink on my sheets. I tried getting the stain out but I couldn’t. For some reason I kept the sheet around though it never graced a bed again. Now, I may be the only person in my city with 400 thread count drop cloths. Yep, I decided they had to pay rent if they were going to take up space. 8 months ago

11/17/13 I’ve been doing pretty good about using yarn ~ 10 skeins this week. However, I purchased 6 skeins (yeah, I’m crazy) from Goodwill. I finished off a jigsaw puzzle. A USPS employee delivered a package to me yesterday, in the rain, and his pen wouldn’t work. I took the card into the house signed it and gave him the card and my pen, since I still have a bunch, just not hanging around cluttering up my house.

11/7/13 After etalking with Diosa, I finished formulating the plan for pens and pencils and I now have 2 pens, 2 pencils, a pair of scissors, and a nail file in every downstairs room of my house. I think I have a better chance of using them if they are readily available throughout the house.

I’ve gone way overboard. I purchased and then was given a total of 128 skeins of yarn and gave away 5 skeins immediately.

grandmonsterstill October

10/23 I gave away a skein of yarn yesterday and stopped at Goodwill on the way home, only to find 3 more skeins. I’ve been using candles whenever I meditate and sometimes just because I like them. So, I know I’ve used 2 for sure and maybe more. It really is time for a recount of them and yarn. Maybe tomorrow? That may be when I round up pens and pencils for a big purge or just a count of them.

10/26 I haven’t gathered up all the pens and pencils, but I did realize that I wanted to add another category to this list ~ jigsaw puzzles. I have a bunch my mother and others have given me. I finally pulled one out and put it together this week. Most of them have 1000 pieces and I really enjoy doing them. I give them away after their completion. I counted all the candles and I must have miscounted them somewhere along the way because I have 49 right now despite using some every morning. I’ve adjusted the count.

Revised list

diosaPaper and pens

After the household amalgamation we’ve noticed we have tons of paper, post its, and pens/highlighters. We have a little unit to store them in and apparently we have been storing them instead of using them.
So, pads of paper are coming out for grocery and to do lists. The pens are another issue though, since most of them are still working….hmmmm 10 months ago

So I inventoried the seeds I have, and I have plenty. I don’t need to buy more – I need to save and buy some land to sow them on!
Some items from the inventory
  • hundreds of black eye peas
  • hundreds of Kentucky Wonder pole beans
  • more than a dozen varieties of Morning Glories
  • lavender moon flower seeds
  • more than 20 types of tomato seeds, herb seeds, and flower seeds
  • carrots, corn, yellow squash, zucchini, patty pan squash, and pumpkin

So the last time I was here, was August. I had very little time and now that I have more time, I don’t want to do much. I suppose that is because I did so much in July, August and September working with my mother and helping her back to recovery. I wouldn’t change the time I spent with her. kmom2468Made a yummy meal

Found enough stuff around the pantry and in the fridge to make tacos. Sure, we didn’t have lettuce and tomatoes – but I made a box of flavored rice that’s been sitting around – and with salsa and sour cream and an extra dose of cheese, turned out well. And, kept some food from going bad and being wasted. 11 months ago

kmom2468Full suite of MS Office for Free?

Yes! Since I wanted 2010 not 2013, I got it through my employer’s Microsoft Home Users Program (HUP) for free. But even if I did want the 2013 version, it would have only cost me $10. So I used what I had – HUP program through work – and didn’t spend any money! Yay! 12 months ago

kmom2468Post cards!

I found over a dozen post cards that I purchased while on vacation. And, I found enough stamps to mail them with – I am always buying stamps on business travel because I forget to pack them – I hunted down all the stamps and I found I even have enough for more correspondence later. I hope my friends and family will smile when they receive them… yes, use the stuff – let it fulfill its purpose in life. And – no out of pocket expenses. 12 months ago

kmom2468I'm cash poor, but have lots of stuff

from when I wasn’t cash poor. I find myself wanting to spend money kind of like the emotional crutch of eating too much, and too much of the wrong stuff. But I don’t need to buy “stuff” – I have lots. Just need to USE it instead of buying more stuff that will just collect dust. My camera, or my bicycle, or organize my garden seeds, fill my bird feeders (this does require purchasing seed, but I have about 20 lbs of the stuff sitting around, and the feeder has hung empty for days now)... etc. 12 months ago

7/5/13 I gave 2 skeins of yarn to a student to experiment with felting. I also donated a yarn I just didn’t like the color.

I’ve found so much paper stashed all over my house, that I’ve decided to do a separate goal to get rid of notebooks. So, I’m removing it from here.

Revised list
.
lotion (24 bottles -4 = 20)
soap (57 bars -42 = 15)
candles (204-151 = 53)

6/28/13 Today I purchased 7 skeins of yarn for $1. I can’t be trusted around yarn.

6/23/13 This past Monday, I had my student from last week back again. I gave her 4 skeins of yarn. I also finished off another skein of baby yarn. Working on baby blankets is slow work for using up yarn. I finished off the last of the body mist that someone gave me for Christmas, as linen spray.

6/16/13 I taught a crochet lesson to a new student this last Wednesday and gave a skein of yarn to her. I hauled a lot of things to Goodwill yesterday, including a plastic bin which I wanted to rid my house of! I do like clear bins, and one for Christmas décor that is green and I dislike any others. I like to see what is in the bins, so I am not content to have opaque bins. Ironically, I did buy an additional clear bin after getting rid of one of the blue bins. I’ve put winter clothes in it and I plan to pack away all my gloves, scarves and winter accessories after they are sorted, washed and dried.

6/9/13 I’ve been using what I have and neglecting to say what I have been using up. I finished another bar of soap and was immediately (my hair was still wet from the shower where the soap breathed its last) given another bar of soap as a part of a package of skincare delights that included shower gel and lotion. I’m not keeping track of shower gel any more, and drat I am keeping track of lotion. I gave 3 skeins of yarn to my BFF and 6 skeins of yarn to a 10-year-old girl who came to my last Yarn-crafters meeting. I’ve used more skeins and I can’t remember how many. I’ll subtract 1 extra until I take the time to do a recount.
